Pop science and informational YouTube channels...full of misinformation. - When the fact checking is worse than Buzzfeed

Knowing Better. At least with his recent video.

Here’s Actual Justice Warrior’s response to the video

Shame, since Knowing Better shat on Adam Ruins Everything with that Columbus Video

Knowing Better did a recent video on Smedley Butler and War is a Racket, which I found informative-ish at first, but then at the end he unironically gives a shoutout to Carlos Maza. Fuck him. I don't know much about Knowing Better, but he strikes me as Breadtube-lite.

Now, earlier this week I tried to be nice and give a 2nd chance to Weird History after previously shitting on them for posting so many bogus videos, but once again they failed me. I watched a video today on medieval battles, and had to ragequit after a certain detail at 3:53...

This nigga seriously claimed William Shakespeare wrote a speech for King Henry V...despite the former being born a whole 140 fucking years after the latter. I checked the comments section, and sure enough a lot of people pointed this out and asked if the OP was trolling us as a joke or just plain stupid for putting a glaring inaccuracy in the video. I'm gonna assume he's just stupid, because when he gives that little "fact" about Shakespeare, he doesn't play a sound effect of a slide whistle or anything to show it was an obvious joke.

This video wonderfully illustrates the problem with pop-history YouTube channels.

Full of non-specifics and generalities. Also, so short and ADHD that it is impossible to give any thorough explanation or nuance on the topic they are presenting.

I assume he has confused https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/St_Crispin's_Day_Speech as a real thing after watching the film version of Henry V and doing basic searching to conclude that Shakespeare wrote it for that battle rather than the reality which is he wrote it for his play about the life of Henry the Fifth.

Crash Course

John Green talks about history from a Eurocentric view while shitting on white people and praising all other cultures. He tries to make History "cool" and down with the kids while ignoring crucial events that might make interfere with the narrative. His video on the Haitian Revolution is something to behold.

This guy is a simp, too. His crash course on Feminism was predicated by a slobbery speech where he apologized to all women everywhere because evil, mean, nasty men like him wouldn't let girls into their He-Man Fun Time Adventure and Action Club. Never mind that, back in the days before modern medicine, chemical birth control/condoms, and mechanization, there might have been good reasons for women to stay home and not don armor and ride out to fight the Saracens. (A lack of refrigeration requiring a live woman to be on the premises to feed newborns milk at all times, for one.) Also, a woman's status and freedom could depend on her situation, her resources and her personality. Wealthy women had better food, medicine and clothing (and wetnurses, freeing them up for all sorts of activities,) , but they might not have had much say over whom they married, especially if they were royalty. The point is, you can't paint all of history with a broad brush and say "All women victims, all men oppressors." Real life was a complicated affair and some women received good treatment and held higher status than men, while others did not. Most men and women received advantages over some areas of their lives while experiencing disadvantages in other areas of their lives, and a soyboy's blubbery apology isn't going to accurately reflect the reality of what went on. Kids would be better off cracking open a 90 year old book to read about history than watching some garishly animated Youtube Show that tries to push Critical Race Theory and other SJW woke nonsense into their little brains.

The scary thing is, high schools actually use him as an educational source. Countless classes I had liked to show videos from him.

I think the better question would be, which channels aren't. I have yet to come across a single one that didn't have misinformation or ideologically driven omissions.
First one that comes to mind might be Voices of the Past. The man just reads historical texts as well as provides links to the sources in the videos. Any bias comes from the text itself.

Timeghost history(and their other channels) is okay, Mark Felton productions is awesome, some of battle youtubers are good.
Even Sabatons history channel is cool.

Any type of Dinosaur channel run by a fucking furry.

They're sooooo fuucking salty about their big feathered dinos being BTFO by Science.

T-REX AND TRICERATOPS DID NOT HAVE FEATHERS YOU PUSHED THIS FEATHERED SHIT FOR DECADES AND IT AMOUNTED TO NOTHING
Source? Did the Furries take over the Queen's U paleontology department too? They (specifically Guy Narbonne) also teach that dinos had feathers though they were structured differently than modern ones due to being entirely for warmth.

yeah everyone seems to be "all feathers" or "no feathers" when it comes to non-avian dinos... and a lot on the "no feathers" faction still insists on pushing the "scales not feathers" narrative

the same debacle(albeit about hair) is happening to proto-mammals like dimetrodons and gorgonopsids ffs. Just saying, isn't the option of "mostly bald and barely covered by integument coverings" an option?(look at elephants, they aren't completely devoid of hair, they still have... some hair)

and his chinless brother Hank(aka the moron who sided with Sarkeesian in the Vidcon incident with Sargon) is continuing the baseless soysplaining but in the field of STEM. Just saw the video they made about Damascus steel, well rather, Shadiversity's response to the Scishow Damascus steel video... directly watching scishow videos feels like I gain a stage of cancer

oh and dont get me started on asapscience

Even when these channels information is accurate many of them just rub me the wrong way with how smug they are or when they're very obviously trying to push the party line by doubling back on topics they already covered or by just making political bullshit out of the blue. The blonde guy in the red shirt that travels everywhere is one that just seems super smug all the time and Hank Green just has his fingers in too many pies for me to think that he is in any way genuine. How many Youtube channels is he involved in? How does he balance being an author with that? Doesn't he have kids too? Veritasium is at least generally more approachable as are others like Mark Rober, especially with him at least having at least had some sort of scientific background with being a NASA engineer, but too much of the scene is full of people way too smug about generally being a more boring Bill Nye (back when he wasn't absolutely insane). That and when the video topic is about some heavily theoretical topic or one that really has no more evidence than a hypothesis, yet they push the existence of whatever they're talking about as fact. Like that video about the speed of light in multiple directions by I believe Veritasium. Sure, it's 'possible' that we cannot accurately record light in both directions, but the video presents no evidence on the topic either way so it's like a video arguing bigfoot exists but the uploader admits all existing 'evidence' is fake and we should just believe him. What exactly is scientific about that?

No one's mentioned AsapSCIENCE? They went way off the deep end. I remember them being all right years ago, but now it's all these agenda-laden videos. The majority of their audience is children and they know that, so they choose to talk about the science of transgenderism and whatnot.

At least they talked about some of the misinformation regarding nuclear power, that was pretty based.
