Disaster Portion of Interstate 95 collapses in Philadelphia after tanker fire burns under overpass - A tractor trailer fire started under an I-95 overpass and spread to the lanes above.

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Multiple lanes of Interstate 95 northbound in Philadelphia have collapsed after a tanker truck fire erupted underneath an overpass.

The fire broke out just before 6:30 a.m. on the off-ramp to Cottman Avenue, right underneath I-95, in the Tacony section of the city.

Video from Chopper 6 on Sunday morning showed the northbound lanes of the highway were reduced to rubble.

Chopper 6 files over a portion of Interstate 95 northbound that collapsed after a tanker fire.

The southbound lanes are also compromised, officials said.

All lanes of the highway are shut down between the Woodhaven and Aramingo exits.

There has been no word on any injuries or if any other vehicles were involved.

Watch raw video from the Action Cam of a fire under an I-95 overpass in the Tacony section of Philadelphia that led to a partial collapse of the highway.

Crews are working to get the fire under control. It's not yet known what was inside the tanker truck, or why it caught fire.

Manholes have been exploding in the area because of the fire. Everyone is being asked to avoid the scene.

Fire officials provided an update after a tanker fire caused a portion of I-95 north to collapse in Philadelphia's Tacony section on June 11, 2023.

Officials say the extent of the damage means this is a situation that will impact the region for a long time to come.

"Today's going to be a long day. Obviously, with 95 northbound gone and southbound questionable, it's going to be even longer," Dominick Mireles, the director of the Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management.

Multiple agencies are involved in the response to the crash, with some expressing concern regarding the runoff due to the proximity to the Delaware River.

Officials are treating the accident as a hazmat situation. Health officials will determine the environmental impact.

Believe something like this happened in Atlanta some years ago. This sure will fuck up traffic and commutes, take some time to fix.
This is Pennsylvania we are talking about, three seasons are construction and yet nothing gets done, somehow. I've seen more PennDOT workers not working than working.

Again? We just went through a contamination alert in March. The second they officially declare that the water might be polluted there's going to be no bottled water left. I'm still not 100% certain the last time was a big nothingburger. If I get some horrible cancer a few years from now I'll know why.

They're already asking about the enviromental impact instead of if anyone died or if the driver made it out. Fuck my life

There's nothing about the driver or other people anywhere. It was Sunday morning so the traffic was probably not that bad. Had it been Monday though I can't imagine the fatalities. I am concerned about the water though because even if it doesn't get into a section of the river we use for drinking water people are still going to panic buy every case of water in sight. Again.

i'm pretty sure that tankers aren't supposed to be stopped under bridges for this exact fucking reason. and inb4 someone whines about our infrastructure, which we all know fucking sucks, in this particular case that portion of the bridge had been replaced pretty recently, something like two years ago, so it was entirely because of the fucking dipshit driving the tanker, who better goddamn be dead after causing such a fucking disaster.

you've seen actual people at those construction sites? all i ever see are orange cones and abandoned construction vehicles, but no actual human beings. shit's like seeing a fucking unicorn.

alternatively, i've seen construction sites where one guy is digging a hole and two guys are watching. you see, because the guy in the hole has a spotter who has a spotter who has a spotter who has a spotter....
