I think that the negative post ratings really are a detriment to the community at large--if your posts are that shitty, the mods should be able to delete posts or lock threads--that's what the "Report" button is for, right? I do remember certain topics where the mods have said "Do not reply to shit posts with more shit" or something. If your total positive postings make up a fraction of your total posts, it should be pretty clear that's what the community thinks of you.

The other thing about the negative post ratings is that it makes it harder to express opinions in more viewpoint-based threads--in some circles, any opinion that's different from the masses or a criticism that not everyone agrees with gets that person labeled as a troll with the masses piling against them. Maybe if the negative posts didn't actually count against you--and yes, I realize that Autistic, Disagree, and Off-Topic don't factor into that--it might encourage people to not be afraid to post in those situations.

As far as i know so called "negative" ratings don't actually hinder your ability to post. So what's the difference between having those buttons and someone just replying to your post saying "That's dumb", "hi alog!" or "dude, we talked about this like 10 posts back... read the thread!" ? I thought the expanded ratings were really just a way to keep response posts at a minimum if you don't have anything to add beyond the response itself.

I think he's saying that negative ratings discourage people from posting. I don't know why though, they do fuck all other than appear as a red bar.

I know they do in particular instances. For instance, I've heard from Obnoxion that he's afraid to post at all because he has an actual fear of being rated dumb. Someone else had also said they stopped posting for a while over 1 dumb rating.

I really don't get it.. I get rated dumb all the time. It's a part of expressing an opinion. People will disagree with you and say you're an idiot.

I guess it just boils down to some users being more sensitive about these things. I mean, yeah, it's the Internet and we're on a forum about an autistic manchild, so if you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. But I dunno, I just see where these guys are coming from is all. Maybe I'm too nice.

I only rate posts DUMB if they are really DUMB. Otherwise, a dislike or disagree works just as well.

Its a bit odd though, I mean being a peer review system of course right? But I made a bit of a stupid post in the Vade thread where I pretended to be a cowboy doll otherkin. Was expecting a few dumbs. I got 14 Winner ratings and counting.

I don't understand you people.

Yeah, but in the days of before the rating system, if I called someone an idiot on the forums point-blank (another member) that would probably involve discipline somehow, maybe being edited, maybe worse. What changed?

What's with the the phenomenon where someone says "I might get rated autistic for this" or something along those lines and they get bombarded with said rating?
Typical Facepunch funnyman stuff. But the logic is pretty clear : if you're predicting you're going to be rated Autistic, why'd you not make the post itself less autistic instead of shielding it with the predictions ? I know Something Awful bans for predicting moderation for the same reason; if you know your post's full of poo and goes against the rules, why make it in the first place ?

No punitive actions, but I've started deleting or editing the posts of anyone who does this in my area. It's incredibly stupid.
