I personally didn't think it was a joke until now, I took it at face value but refrained from rating it 'A-log' in the off-chance it turned out to be a joke(which, as you said, was).

If it wasn't joking, it would technically fill the official definition of "A-Logging" ("punching down in a way that is shameful to yourself") not because "oooooh it's racist!!!" but because it appeared to be fairly mad toward a person who appears relatively or hasn't really done anything to warrant such a spiteful response. On the extreme end is Marjan, (who can be a-logged too), but the threshold to what's considered "a-logging" toward Marjan is higher since he holds highly contemptible opinions and his conduct in the threads is extremely toxic, ergo it stands to reason for a lot of people to make fun of him using all available means, including making fun of his home country in association. The same with Nick Bate, he's scum if the allegations are true, but masturbatory revenge fantasies about him make us look bad, and after a few pages of variations of "I hope Nick Bate gets assraped in prison!" doesn't carry the same novelty value as in the beginning. What's considered a-logging can shift within the thread so it can be kinda "call it when I see it"-thing.

But that's the thing with jokes, I would think twice or thrice before taking anything a dedicated baitposter posts at face value, but people who don't know how those people operate are right in rating the post for it's face value.

I had thought calling him a faggot and then a blatantly racist remark was quite clearly hyperbole, but I see where your coming from. Needless to say im going to be considerably more cautious before posting in future.

I wouldn't really say it came across as spiteful or angry towards him at all. It seemed to be a lazy, dickish jab, yes, but it was a lazy, dickish jab at the expense of black people, not Kent in particular.

A post I would consider a better example of A-Logging would be this one from the Breeding Zone thread. Stuff like YEAH I'D LOVE TO SEE THESE FAGGOTS GET TIED UP AND SLOWLY TORTURED TO DEATH seems much more A-Loggy than, for example, @Blue Armed Bandit 's post in the same thread about all gays having AIDS, which is just, well, dumb.

I'd like if A-Log one was retained, you could the same way make the case for a lot of the specific ratings but A-log is part of our forum culture and history. (consider we also have the "Deviant" that's pretty much never used and semper fidelis that's there just for variety). The variety in the ratings may not be always useful, but it's still nice to have for fun. Trollshielding or needlessly comparing one's self to a lolcow(which falls under A-logging) does come up even if the body of the post itself isn't horrendously stupid or malicious, so there is in my personal opinion use for a separate a-log rating.

But isn't deviant one of the special ratings you got along with horrifying if you donated? I'm guessing not too many have it to even use it.

My only complaint would be that one of my highest rated comments was a holocaust joke made when people thought eli was jewish and the one with 25+ negative ratings was a black joke. I'm probably just misreading the forum but that seems inconsistent.

I have seen posts that have had many positive ratings, and I just do an internal facepalm.

I may not like it, but other people do.

Saying "bronies should be put into Auschwitz"(an actual post) would fall into the same category and it's still a-logging even if bronies are not-really-welcome people on this site and it's definitely not too offensive for our standards; it's still a groan-worthy non-contribution and "punching down in a manner that is shameful to yourself).

On the subject of A-logging, I know I said in the Sick Nick thread that it shouldn't have an A-log rating, but I realize now that I was wrong then. Blatant trollshielding is also a form of A-logging, and people have done that to pretty much every lolcow. For example, the dogfucking thread is a great example of how to A-log Vade because the OP shared extremely disturbing information about himself, and then when the reader was thinking "wow what a sick fuck" he unsuccessfully attempted to deflect attention off himself in his post by saying that he is STILL BETTER THAN VADE BECAUSE REASONS.

One thing that I've noticed is that posts that reveal the author's powerlevel tend to get lots and lots of positive ratings. I've been guilty of pressing the Feels button when I read them myself because the poster is describing an interesting experience, but they should probably be more discouraged because they often make the object of attention the poster and not the lolcow.
