I've found the best way to avoid negative ratings is to avoid talking about how you're better than the lolcow, and to talk about something that's relevant to the topic. Also it's best to avoid stating the obvious.

I just get the vibe, like on so many other forums, that it's mostly catered to popular members and opinions. It seems to drive away potential members, and I've been running forums for years to experience this. Even a well-worded post that doesn't adhere to the usual views of the community get voted down, which is unfair. I believe there should be a limit to how much you can give in a day.

Protip : the ratings don't affect anything and even getting flagged with a ton of negs won't get your opinion hidden.

That's how non-anonymous boards usually are regardless of whether a ratings system exists or not : the people who have accrued accountability or goodwill from the community over the years get their voices heard better than people who are yet to prove themselves, one way or another.

Ratings are fine except when a retard tries to use them to get petty revenge, not noticing the person they're trying to get revenge upon thinks they're retarded and couldn't care less.
