I know for a fact that the worst thing you can use when doing graphics work and layouts is a monitor of any kind. Doesn't matter what it is, drawing with crayons in the moonlight is preferable according to those people.

Powerlevel here but I’m a professional designer and I still use an oversized A4 wacom intuos 3 that I bought for admittedly £460 in 2007. You can get the same model with the pen and the mouse on ebay now for less than £50, and I always recommend this model to students in my classes as it is cheap, and extremely sturdy, with no gimmicks like dials, touch pads or whatever that usually fail within a year.

Also a cheap alternative to the ridiculously expensive nibs that wear out about once a month is nylon garden strimmer cord (3mm), instead of five nibs for £20, you can get 100 metres of this which is the equivalent of about 3000 nibs (all you have to do is cut 3cm off, and rub the end down on a bit of sandpaper to make it feel scratchy like a real wacom pencil nib) for about £5.

You can also buy a sheet of 1mm perspex and attach it to the tablet surface with a bit of blue tak if you want to not wear out the graphite sheet (which is about £30 to replace)... and you can sand it down if you don’t want a shiny surface. It’s all magnetic so doesn’t stop it working in any way. That wacom has at least eight inches of hover so adding a few mm makes zero difference. Plus wacom mice are fantastic, true wireless, felt bottom, real high DP, because of the nature of them, and no batteries as they act exactly the same as the pen on pen mode, and mouse mode blows most stuff out of the water. They have 5 buttons either hand and a really nice scroll wheel too and are symmetrical (ambidextrous).

r/buildapc is full of these. God forbid someone wants to have "old tech" on their PC like Blue-ray players or wants to use all of their fan slots on their case. If someone is adding a CD/DVD player in this day in age there is likely a reason for it and they don't want to hear about your opinions on CDs being obsolete.

My favourite are the guys that bitch about intel vs amd. You can almost taste the Cheeto dust from their fat smug fingers. Most people just want to know what's going to give them the best bang for their buck.

Pretty much anything related to Computers or PC Gaming on reddit is like this. And if you mention you have a prebuilt PC, no matter what the reason (ex. individual parts being very expensive and taxed where you live), you will get a lot of rich fat elitists telling you that you should BUILD IT YOURSELF BUILD IT YOURSELF!!, ignoring your whole issue. Either that or /r/pcmasterrace spergs start boasting about how you're a petty inferior console peasant for not building your own PC to play games.

Also Intel vs AMD vs Nvidia or whatever is the PC equivalent of console war autism.

If there is a wider question based on the 'submission of the thesis given a problem' aspect, it might be worth asking/checking on the Academia StackExchange. You've already done the work, so having to redo anything major is probably out of scope at this point (funding, time, ... etc.), and that shouldn't prevent you from submitting or getting the PhD. It's just a matter of clearly stating any assumptions made and the limitations surrounding the work, and preparing for the viva with this in mind. Showing off a mistake you made, explaining what happened, why it happened, what you learned from it, and what everybody else can learn from your predicament might just do the trick.

I'm not familiar with streaming setups but software encoding will produce better results than hardware encoding at the expense of taking up a lot of resources so having a couple of unused cores could be useful. Maybe he was going for something like that. In most games it probably won't matter much.

You should add to the shit show and point out that between Intel, AMD and Nvidia, Intel's QuickSync is the best HW encoder. It can only be used when using the IGP but that's not necessary to say.

I'm guessing he might have had some ASCII art named as '.art' back in the day and just not read the bit about AOL (or not recognized that AOL wasn't just showing ASCII art).

The .art in question was a proprietary bitmap image format by AOL. The only way to open it I can think of would be old, as in Win2k old, versions of ACDSee.

I kept a Blu-ray drive in my desktop just to fill the slot, but its come in handy throughout the years. Why bother with an external when an internal takes up no space and is always ready to go? Plus, keeping backups on discs was always the way to go, you don't wind up in all-your-eggs-in-one-basket scenarios, like if your 2TB HDD just decides to croak one day. It's much more likely that you'll be able to salvage data off of a rotting DVD-R than a dead HDD.

I really wish that the Holographic Versatile Disc came to market, we'd have 200gb discs to use, rather than dodgy USB drives. Cloud storage can go fuck itself.

The hate for optical drives is funny. JUST USE GOOG DRIVE!
I keep a folder on my desktop and just toss service manuals,PDFs and other useful shit in to it as I go. When it gets to 4.7 or 25gig I burn it to Mdick or BR and then empty and repeat. That disc will sit in my cabinet until the end of time with zero effort to maintain it.
Taking away local permanent information storage really is the greatest trick (((they))) ever played.

Someone should ask the same question on a Linux forum, say that you have 200 old AOL images to convert, then get told that you don't need 200 images because you only have two eyes and here's a picture of Tux in a matroska container so you're already 50% towards fulfillment.

I keep around a copy of XP in a VM for old games and oddball situations like that, so I figured I’d just install AOL in it and use that to load the .art files. I don’t even know what they are, they were saved in 2001 and in one of my gigantic random internet pictures directories I’ve been just piling random shit into since I was a child, so they’re probably completely unremarkable but the mystery is getting to me and I’ve got to know.

Plus, I’m really surprised Irfanview couldn’t read .art images.

A random fun fact: my first internet computer was an old-world Macintosh, and the only way I could ever display JPG images on it was through AOL. It couldn’t display JPGs with any of the built-in software, and since AOL could, I never looked for a separate image viewer.
