"Post your Art" Thread

Late and gay spooktober drawing

Ok guys, you seem to somewhat like my art, so I'll try to show you the step-by-step process of shading the thing, mostly because I think this is what I excel at, and honestly, my anatomy and proportion are kind of whack, and you would be better off taking advice from someone else lol.
so we will skip the step with sketching the thing.
Trust me, it consists of a lot of reference searching, drawing, and editing a bunch.

First of all, I'm using a set of liner pens for my drawings. Not sure where they sell these in your area, but I found mine in the regular bookstore. I've chewed through like 5 of these sets and have been pretty happy with them.

As you can see, I already did some shadow mapping and marked stars on the dress so they will have even spread on straight parts and more often on the edges of knees and arms where fabric will be more distant from our perspective.
Also i like to add some guiding lines to keep track of the geometry.

Start with second thinnest pen that you have (in my case it 0.3) and do general outlining of the whole thing.
it might be tempting to use the most thin pen but you would want to save it for shading and more detailed part like hair and hands.

Now we will take a closer look at shade and half-shade.
Take your thinnest pen (0.1) and pick a direction. It looks way better if you drag a line across all surfaces at once in one stroke. for main darkening of the area. It might be hard to do on the larger areas, so take that into account while sketching. There are 3 main ways to switch from shade to half-shade.
1st is the space between the lines
2nd is the direction of the hatching.
And the third one is the number of angles you take. Note that it doesn't look very good if you take 90-degree angles, like a grid, so try to make it 30 and 45 degrees. Curve your lines if the surface is not even, like the eyes of the scull in this case.
You will be spinning the papper in your hand a lot during this step.
After you're done with the areas that should be generally darker, it's time to add some definition in the drawing. Add short hatching on the objects that have to be in the background relative to the object that is directly near it.
Also, don't be afraid to add some scratches and minor details.

Continue untill everything is done.

Face is obviously very important, mostly because it is very easy to fuck up.
Female faces should be mostly clear and lack sharp lines.
Male faces are like marble statues that have to be carved out; the chin, cheek bones, nose, and ridgeline between eyebrows should be looking like a low poly model from the N64 game.
Small advice: it's sometimes very hard to understand if the face looks "human" enough because you've spent the last half an hour looking at your work very closely. So I suggest you take your phone and take a picture of it. for some brain magic reason it helps.

Next, we will discuss the dress.
In our case, it will be jet black and resemble a starry sky. So we will leave spots—in our case, stars—that we will keep clear.
While outlining the sketch, DRAW AROUND IT. Pattern will lose shame and size after we are done filling everything with ink.
Note that i didnt add any stars in the places where body would be in shade to add some dimension (armpits, ass and underboob)
Take the brush and start filling in the drawing.

Case and point about shapes losing sharpness and size.
1730673624683.jpeg

also small thing that will be unavoidable from my expirience, brush is dense in color and it will do 2 things wheneher you want it or not: climb where you dont want it to and leave the mark and shape of each stroke. so try your best to follow the geometry of the shape to minimize the patchiness of the filling.

As you can see you can guess where and how i was holding the pen.
Next take the eareser and go ham. try to remove all the sketch lines that might be still visible.
We almost done.

The only thing that is left is to add some detail where you might have forgotten them, and, optionally, you can take the thickest pen that you have (0.7 in my case) and make an thick outline around the whole drawing to make it pop out. especially helps if you want to add background later.
Hopefully someone will find helpful my autistic rumblings and me pretending to be an artist. or at least it was mildly interesting to look at half-finished work.

Colored in my Lien-Da art! The first looks more like my usual digital coloring style which is a more flat, cell shaded look. The second pic, while in my lineart style, is more of an experiment in coloring. Digital art is like a black hole, man. There's so many filters and affects you can throw on.

Bonus art! Celtic warrior that wasn't supposed to look like John Goodman but still kind of does

As long as you keep uploading some Gwar drawings every now and then!
I will definitely make more GWARt in the near future!
