Big map of a fantasy continent based on ancient Africa, which I call "Aferkah". It's still a work in progress---I still need to add more labels, as well as cities---but so far I got a lot of work done with this. I created all the icons for mountains and vegetation myself using Photoshop's "Brush Presets" feature.

And yes, there will be dinosaurs here. There are some large mammals related to familiar African species in the northern savanna regions of Hekhaptu and the Nyanden Empire, but elsewhere dinosaurs and other reptilian creatures dominate the megafaunal scene.

If you're wondering what New Deutony on the southernmost cape is, it's supposed to represent a colony by a seafaring white people called the Deutons. You could say they are a mishmash of Norse and Dutch Afrikaner influences

Old Ankhe is another character I've planned for my story Luyinda and the Steeltooth, though he doesn't appear until the second act (that is, the one after the excerpt I've shared online). His people, the Batwa, are the aboriginal inhabitants of the Yombi rainforest, and have a shorter ("pygmy") stature and lighter skin than Bayombi like Luyinda. Whereas the Bayombi cultivate crops, forge metal, and have established permanent villages and cities throughout the Yombi region, the Batwa still keep to their old hunter-gatherer lifestyle. On the other hand, the Batwa have a unique piece of technology in the form of simple crossbows such as the one Ankhe's showing off here, which can exceed the Bayombi's traditional bows in power (these are based off real crossbows invented by Central African "pygmy" foragers, going back who knows how far).

This is an illustration of the scene where Luyinda meets Ankhe for the first time. He's taken her to his campfire for recuperation, and he narrates that he recently met her younger brother Mayele whom she's searching for. He tells her the truth she feared she'd find out, but not in the form she thinks. From that point on, Ankhe will be a supporting character who helps Luyinda find something her brother was looking for in that part of the jungle.

This Kushite warrior princess has an archery final coming up tomorrow, so she's sharpening her arrowheads at the last minute. Don't do this at home, kids.

Originally designed with tattoos in mind, this later evolved into something better suited for T-shirts or other clothing. The title was a tough call; I wanted something both Egyptian and hip-hop-sounding, so I settled on "livin' the Pharaoh life" ("living the tomb life" might have sounded better, but it would be more appropriate for a mummy than a live subject). As for the Pharaoh's hand gesture, it's something I made up myself even though it is supposed to look hip-hoppy.

Though born into the literate commoner class of New Kingdom Egypt, Senenmut apparently worked his way up to becoming the royal architect and high steward of Pharaoh Hatshepsut herself. He is the one who claimed credit for designing her famous Mortuary Temple at Deir el-Bahri near Waset/Thebes (modern Luxor). Though Senemut seems to have died a bachelor, his ostensibly close relationship with Hatshepsut has inspired the popular portrayal of him as her handsome paramour. I wouldn't say that scenario is impossible, but I prefer to imagine him as this smarmy old guy who's...desperately anticipating special favors from Her Majesty. A lot of dudes back then would have considered a female Pharaoh quite the trophy, much to her vexation, and none would creep her own more than an old dude in her own administration.

So here's Senenmut brainstorming another scheme to get what he wants from Hatshepsut. Any resemblance to Bill Cosby in either appearance or personality is, I assure you, wholly intentional.

Deep within the jungles of Yombi in the heart of the Aferkan continent, a steeltooth (Tyrannosaurus rex) and a swordbrow (Triceratops prorsus) play out their battle of predator and prey in sight of an ancient Bayombi tomb.

I think it's worth a finish! Oh, how were you thinking of dealing with proportions if you have an idea already? If not maybe I can help!


As for myself, did this mainly as a shading test! That and it's been too long since I drew one of these critters.

I dunno, I usually try to aim for a pseudo-realistic proportion if that makes any sense. A bit exaggerated (like cartoonish big headedness) but not like full on Sanic.
