Hello, fellow parasitic hosts. Here’s a thread where you can post all about pregnancy cravings; the strange, the clever, and the nasty.

It’s not just for kiwis who have/are experiencing pregnancy! You can post about women you know, or even stories you’ve heard about weird craving concoctions. I’ve personally not yet experienced pregnancy, but I heard from my mom about how she would melt M&Ms in the microwave while she was pregnant with me. Gonna be honest, it’s pretty delicious.

Then there was the woman on my strange addiction who ate 2 to 3 boxes of cornstarch a day while she was pregnant...you get the picture.

When my Mum was pregnant with me, she was addicted to curry. I'm pretty sure this has something to do with me being a chilli head.

When she was pregnant with my brother, she was addicted to Guinness and he was the biggest, angriest baby out of us all when he arrived. Again, pretty sure there was a connection.

I craved hot pockets for a period; only caved in once or twice. I wanted (and had) ice cream practically every day. During the last month or so I had a specific, weird craving for peanut butter and grape jelly on white bread with a side of canned peaches.

I knew someone who ate chalk and soap while pregnant. Yes, most of her children came out with Down's syndrome. And they grew up to eat weird shit like bleach (and somehow not die?). All 8 of them. I wish I was fucking joking.

Also quick edit I've heard a LOT of stories of women eating cornstarch while pregnant, why is that so common?

Well, that explains your user name.

I craved ice the entire time. I was heavily pregnant during the summer, and I had a giant yeti cup of Ice ALL THE TIME. I once broke down crying because I didn't have any at one point, amongst the stupidest things I cried about.

At the end, I craved Buffalo wings and ranch. I ate them weekly prior to having Baby Spoon, and he happens to love them now as well.

Some women crave shit like dirt and other such oddities, and it is because their body isn't getting enough of a mineral or vitamin. So, the body will drive a woman's mind to get a form of what they are missing. It's called Pica. I was technically diagnosed with it because ice has no nutritional value.

Normal stuff for me, pregnant at the moment. Mostly fruit, but it has to be really cold. Canned peaches from the fridge, nearly frozen grapes, stuff like that.

I'm usually picky about what I eat (organic, "clean" etc) but gave in to a craving for McDonald's cheeseburgers today. Hadn't had it in almost 10 years. The stomachache I have now makes me wish I hadn't given in.

I remember the trope in the 90s was pickles and ice cream. It was even mentioned in an Arthur book when the mom was pregnant. I was a kid in the 90s and the idea disgusted me.

Honestly don't have anything to share about pregnancy cravings, but I've always remembered from the "Life's Greatest Miracle" NOVA special how the wife and husband would go out walking in the city to go out for lunch/dinner, and they'd be stopping outside of every restaurant they pass so the wife could do a smell-test for a moment. Smells like fluctuated with her so there were days she didn't mind particular smells only to then get nauseated from them a week later. Made me wonder for a long time if all pregnant women do that or not.

As a picky eater, that's one thing I hope pregnancy will override for me, even if it'll be temporary. It most likely won't and it's quite likely I'll end up developing or getting close to getting pica unless I make that a habit to shovel all the vitamins down my gullet (think there's specific vitamins/supplements pregnant women are supposed to be taking).

The Mrs. and I have yet to put our little skeleton together so that's out but I do remember the cravings my mother had with me the most: pot roast and rocky road ice cream. I hope my wife's cravings won't be some insane bullshit or vile combination.
I have a disntinct feeling it'll be some grody processed food, though. Both of us have largely sworn off processed junk in favor of home-cooked meals. Baby Skeltal is going to get his tendies and Hot Pockets, goddamn it!

My mom always talks about only ever craving one thing when she was pregnant: mild sauce from Del Taco. She'd send my dad out to go get basically anything from there, as long as he got as much mild sauce as possible. A little bit more highbrow than Taco Bell, I guess, but not great.

Gotta love it when everyone talks about their preggo fetish. It's almost like we are in another world
