Culture Prepare yourselves: Skitzocow numbers likely to explode soon - Hearing voices isn't bad, just different, say new activists who don't want to call it schizophrenia

For Rachel Waddingham, who first heard the voices when she was 18, learning to cope with them without medication changed her life.

After coming across the Hearing Voices Network about 15 years ago, she made a conscious decision not to identify as mentally ill. When she told her long-term psychiatrist she wanted to taper off her medication, she got resistance. “Why won’t you let me help you?” the psychiatrist asked.

But Waddingham said if she had a choice, she wouldn’t want to get rid of her voices. They have helped her in many ways: She is good at focusing because she has to block out the voices and skilled at managing conflict because the voices can be “pretty harsh.” She also thinks she is more generous as a person, more open to others’ perspectives and more in touch with her own anxieties. The voices serve as a kind of early warning system for internal stress.

“If I pay attention, I know before it becomes an issue,” she said.

Next step: only doctors who hear voices are qualified to treat patients who hear voices!

DO YOU HEAR THE VOICES TOO

SANITY IS FOR THE WEAK

They have every right to do this, and I hope it causes an explosion of mentally ill people insisting they aren't mentally ill because they don't like the term. After all if trannies can demand their obvious mental illness gets removed from the dsm because it hurts their feelings, anyone can.
how long until they disband the dsm

Has there ever been a skitzo that only heard helpful voices? Like, they'd be in their home, rocking back in forth as a voice in their head is yelling, "YOU NEED TO SEEK PSYCHIATRIC ASSISTANCE!!"

From what I've seen in documentaries the voices are usually negative and encourage people to harm themselves. I know someone who hears voices and doesn't medicate properly. He's constantly told to kill himself to prove the existence of God.

Celebrating schizophrenia is not a good idea. I'm all for removing the stigma of mental illness in order to improve people's lives and encourage them to get help. But this is a whole other beast and may actually cause more suicides.

Articles like this will only encourage even more tumblrinas to play pretend with a very serious mental condition as well as discourage people from seeking help because they've been told it's normal to hear voices. People with paranoid schizophrenia are very open to influences that fuel their paranoia and the last thing you want to do is encourage them to allow their condition to go untreated.

I never thought of that. But now that you bring it up I feel that there will be a lot of bitching about how ablest it is in the future. Plus so many conditions are labeled as a "culture" now. Look at autism and even Down Syndrome. People keep saying if we can cure these conditions or 100% prevent them then we are committing genocide. There are even deaf people who don't want deafness cured. It seems very strange to me that you don't want a disability to be curable and preventable. Just look at obesity. In almost all cases it's preventable and treatable. Only a small number of people are saddled with horrible conditions that make losing weight and maintaining weight loss extremely difficult. But "muh fat culture".

I'd hate to see schizophrenia as a culture. Because it's a horrible thing to go through and you know that most of the advocates for it being some cool club will be tumblr attention whores who use hashtags like #actuallyautistic and #actuallyDID

tbf, the way we are curing Downs is through genocide. There isn't a treatment other than abortion.

This is fucking terrible. Not only terrible, but extremely dangerous. Untreated schizophrenia only gets worse. Schizophrenia is a progressive mental illness. You have to be on meds 24/7, because if you go off them, you will get worse and it will not revert back to a more mild form.

There is only pausing the progression. And eventually, if left untreated, very little works. It also gets worse as you age.

My neurology prof said the worst disease he encountered was schizophrenia. Because eventually, you not only hear voices, it progresses to losing all touch with reality. Encouraging schizophrenics to not medicate or seek treatment is some of the dumbest shit I have ever heard. The things that we do for feelings these days is insane. We are actively promoting ruining lives.

The woman can ignore them now, but it only gets worse. She is going to end up homeless, screaming at traffic because eventually those voices will overwhelm her and destroy any semblance of reality.
