‘Prison food’: Disney fans slam skimpy, overpriced, ‘disgusting’ grub at theme parks

Customers at Disneyland and Disney World are griping about skimpy, overpriced food portions at the theme parks — with some even slamming the meals as “disgusting slop” and “prison food.”

One posted an official ad for Disney World’s $16.99 lobster roll, which shows it overflowing with chilled, juicy lobster meat cradled in a bed of crisp greens.

Next to that the guest, who called herself “Marlene,” posted an unappetizing photo of what she actually got — a beaten-up hot dog bun with a tablespoon-size scoop of dried-up lobster meat sitting atop half a lettuce leaf.

After she complained, a Disney employee “did bring her an extra lobster roll sandwich to make up for the portion size,” the blog reported. “But unfortunately, Marlene said the second sandwich was just as bad as the first one.”

The uproar started, according to Disney blog “Inside the Magic,” after chief financial officer Christine McCarthy said late last year the company will begin “reducing portions” at Disney Parks restaurants, claiming that it “would be good for Guests’ waistlines.”

In reality, the food has simply gone downhill even as portions have shrunk, according to customers. Another angry Disney World guest posted a photo of a bowl of penne, which included three shriveled meatballs.

“This was $12. They don’t believe in sauce apparently,” the customer wrote.

“I’ve had microwave meals that look better,” replied one fan.

“Wow I would NOT pay $12 for that,” wrote another.

“Looks like prison food,” another chimed in, while another called it “Disgusting slop.”

“Well, considering a 20 oz Coke costs $6, $12 for this dish sounds about right,” yet another user commented.

Another guest revealed how the company has skimped on its Mickey beignets, which cost $5 for three fried donuts in the shape of Mickey Mouse’s head.

“WTF Disney, you weren’t kidding about cutting portions,” one park goer wrote of the beignet, which appeared to be hollowed out.

Others posted photos of prix-fixe appetizers such as a salad composed of a few chopped-up lettuce leaves and some halved cherry tomatoes and radishes. A cheese and charcuterie board had just one cube and a single wedge of cheese next to a rolled-up slice of prosciutto with dried crackers and some unidentifiable spreads.

According to the Disney blog, a manager said the skimpy portions are “not because of Disney cutting costs,” but instead “due to supply chain issues.”

Either way, customers have been griping about higher prices at Disney World and Disneyland and cutbacks in service since CEO Bob Chapek took charge.

Disney, which has been hit hard by the pandemic, has been increasing prices in order to make up for the loss of business.

Late last year, Disney said it would increase ticket prices at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in Anaheim, Calif., this year, noting that its popular single-day ticket price would jump 6.5% to $164 for admission to one park, while a two-day park hopper pass would cost $319, up nearly 9%.

According to Inside the Magic, even prices for ice cream have been jacked up. The Mickey’s premium ice cream sandwich and chocolate-coated premium bar rose from $5.69 to $5.99

At Disney World restaurant Ale & Compass, New England Seafood Pot Pie increased to $28 from $25, while Brick’ Lemon-Herb Half Chicken jumped to $24 from $22. The park’s watering hole, Trader Sam’s Tiki Terrace, has hiked cocktail prices by $2 to $3 a drink, with the restaurant’s signature Nautilus cocktail now priced at a whopping $35.

On the merchandise front, Walt Disney World News Today reported that several items at the Florida-based park are seeing increases ranging between $5 and $15. A Miss Piggy backpack, released a year ago for $80, now costs $95. Mickey ear headbands jumped $10 in price to $39.99, while a Monsters Inc. water bottle is up by $5 to $29.99.

In response, customers have sounded off on Reddit and other social media platforms, vowing to take their business elsewhere.

“If you’re the kind of person that budgets or saves for vacations, Disney Parks aren’t for you any longer,” wrote one angry customer on Reddit earlier this year, saying the company had ditched everyday people for the well-to-do. “That’s a Premium Physical Experience, and there’s plenty of national and international wealthy families to afford going indefinitely.”

Another lamented his recent Disney World experience, adding: “Up until now, I’ve not minded paying the prices as I’ve been able to justify it with what we were getting, or, at least in the memories we’ve made. Somehow, it never quite felt like full on exploitation. But I’ve finally hit my breaking point.”

Disney did not immediately return requests for comment.

I went in '97 or '98 as a three year old and still remember the magical beauty of Disneyland. Went in CA, too. That no longer exists and we need to accept that. Take your family to see the natural wonders of the world. The US has such beautiful sights, and you'll build beautiful memories that'll last a lifetime free from woketarded, money grabbing bullshit.

I remember going to Disney Land at like 12 and enjoying the rides and such, but because I was precocious for my age, I also remember a deep seated... I don't know how to express it. Shame isn't the right word, but I guess I just saw through the facade enough to realize I was costing my parents a ton of money for this Disney experience that I was probably a few years too old for mentally. I couldn't ignore the fact that having the Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes was costing my parents money I'd rather they not spend on that.

From what it sounds like now, it's way way worse.

This was the same feeling I had as a kid! Maybe if you go to Disney as a tween you either hit peak consoomer, or you turn into the larval form of a Disney adult.

Everything I read about the evolving FastPass system makes it sound anxiety-producing and the opposite of fun, on top of the existing money suck.

I liked Tom Sawyer Island and the fake French Quarter stuff, Pirates and the Haunted Mansion. It'd be neat to go back if you could just wander around there. And if it were before the movies again. And also it were 20 years ago.

Disneyland used to have really high-quality food, like going to a local restaurant. I haven’t been there in ages, so I don’t know when it started to go downhill. Inflation plays a role. Who expects to get a lobster roll for $17 nowadays? Lobster wasn’t cheap before the pandemic. I just don’t bother with lobster anymore. It’s not worth it.

I suppose the goyslop will continue until morale improves.
There is decent food at Disney. Hell they have a few Michelin star tier restaurant. You are just paying way more for the privilege.

California Grill had legit good food when i went there and you got to watch the fireworks. It was also 180 a person. Hotdogs and french fries were decent but it was a hotdog and french fries for 15 dollars. The eggrolls they sell are good.... and cost 5 dollars a pop and are tiny as shit. The buffets all have decent food that would make your golden corral look like dog shit food quality wise. But they all are like 70 to 90 bucks a person and have a "character" that eats your time and they actively start pushing you out after an hour. Also buffets are dogshit in general after being in the florida sun for several hours and have several hours more to look forward too after eating.

Also how they push the prix fix menus where you have to get a 3 course meal for 60 a person.

The thing about Disney, especially its parks, WAS that you were getting a high quality experience for the whole family that you really couldn't get anywhere else. From theming and decor in the parks, to quality food, to the level of care you got from the cast members. Then they started to cheap out on everything starting in the late 80s or early 90s. This piece of theming doesn't need to be THAT realistic, and this food item doesn't need to be THAT high quality, and so on. They spent less and less on making the parks the magical place they used to be, even cutting back on personnel to sweep up the garbage on the ground and empty the trash cans. They cared less and less about the customer. Then they went woke and started caring less and less about families and only wanted to make Lefty retards happy. Now they're in this sorry state.

>Disney has been hit hard by the pandemic
Um pretty sure it was hit much much harder by losses on stupid shit like the Star Wars hotel and a string of woke flops at the box office.
Can’t blame the pandemic for those. Congratulations to our Hebrew overlords for utterly cooking the golden goose in the span of a couple of decades.

I can't imagine spending $500+ on a trip to Disney when I'm sure you could go to a local excursion around your area for a fraction of the cost. Hell, maybe even subscribe to Disney+ on a small vacation, see the sights, go out to eat and not worry about overpriced, corporate nonsense. The current state of Disney being this "magical place" overcome by inflation, dread and DEI looks and sounds so depressing.

I don’t think $500 even covers the cost of just park tickets for a family of 4.

They almost totally re-themed California Adventure within a decade of building it (and a lot of those changes have been swept away for more branded stuff, like Pleasure/Pixar Pier), and with the Star Wars land they could re-theme it to Original Trilogy for a relatively low cost, and reap a lot of goodwill doing so.

Trouble with anything OT is that I've heard a rumor somewhere that Lucas gets a cut of anything that uses the OT, and if anyone would take 100% of nothing over 90% of something, its Disney.

There's no goodwill to reap.

They still took a heaping shit on these characters - so even if they had a ride that was you in the Falcon with Luke and Han, you'd still be reminded that they become sad, jaded, old men because you saw the movies. You can't really unshit on them without retconning the movies they just made.

People pay thousands of dollars a day to stand in line, fuck em. Feed them price jacked grool if they're that stupid. Especially people who bring babies to Disney land. They won't remember it. They'll just loathe you for the rest of their lives.

I'm too practical to waste that kind of money if I had it. I still don't get the fascination with Disney. It's for people with money or people who save up a lot just to blow it on a whole lot of nothing. If I saved up Disney money I think I'd end up just using it for something practical. Because it just looks like a waste in its current state.

Depending on when you went,it could have been really cheap to go. If it was before 2010, then it was pretty cheap, after that, yeah you cost your parents a lot of money.

My family used to go once a year and the tickets were around $20 a person in the 90's up to like $50 or so by 2010. Now the tickets are absolutely insane and not worth it.

This thread is well over a year old. WTF is the necromancer?

Not to shill Knoebels again, but for someone to spend even close to $500 on food there in three days they'd pretty much have to be ordering the entire menu plus all the fixings at the most expensive restaurant there every day, and even then, it's still less than that by over $100.

What I'm saying is that anyone who spends over $500 on food in three days at an amusement park is insane as are the people charging that much, and that both parties deserve each other for enabling one another.

Fucking hell, I'll do ya one better.
I'll throw my hat in the ring and say Dorney Park is a decent enough place too. Plenty of rides, and admission to the park gets you all the thrill rides + admission to the water park side as well. A few friends and I rented a cabana so we had a sort of 'base' of operations to work from, brought our own food in to eat inside the tent. All for under 65 bucks per person.

It's also worth adding that they spent a huge amount of money on Marvel "renovations" to the park. Things like the Tower of Terror got rebranded into a Guardians of the Galaxy ride and Space Mountain got rebranded into Star Wars - Hyperspace Mountain. They made Marvel the future of the park and very much sold it's soul to do so.

Gonna have to be the ACKSHUALLY guy and say that the Space Mountain/Hyperspace Mountain is not a permanent rebranding: it's a cheap af overlay that Disney hauls out around the whole "May the 4th" deal.

did that spaceship themed hotel prove to be the dumpster fire everyone thought it'd be when it was in development?

Yep, it didn't even last a year or a little over a year. When it became clear the costs involved were prohibitive even to Star Wars fanatics that can afford life-size replicas of Han in Carbonite, Disney quietly shuttered the thing.

Maybe they can convert it into a prison.

"Shrinkflation" fills me with rage. Keep the damn size the same and charge me more, you fucking cowards. Stop covering for our horrendous government and evil bankers by keeping the price of something the same through size reduction. Charge people more for the same amount of food and make them mad, nothing will change until people are mad enough that policymakers are afraid for their livelihoods or lives.

That one is really quite bad. These are cheap ingredients, cheap pasta, microwave meatballs and some crappy sauce. There's no reason to even cut the size of this. It's like cutting the portion of breakfast food; the profit margin is so high you can afford to lose a bit.
