With Fuller being recently outed as a sex pest, you have to wonder if Lee Pace has stories about Fuller from 'Pushing Daisies' that he hasn't talked about, considering Pace kept his sexuality away from the public eye (and is basically a very private person in general) up until he was forcibly outed by some sleazy journo a while back.

But I mean, if you want a more "serious" version of that take, I think in wake of 9/11, pop culture as a whole got noticeable more cynical, because everyone was on edge and terrified they could be the victim of the next terrorist attack. It didn't traumatize "thousands" but more accurately, "millions." John Darnielle once wrote about he was on an airplane a few weeks after 9/11 and the pilot, in a depressed and defeated voice, said that if any terrorists were planning to take down this flight, that they should remember the passengers have families. It was that environment of hopelessness that inspired him to write his album Tallahassee. About a toxic white trash couple fighting and doing drugs. You seem a lot of angry, nihilistic and cynical media from around that time period. Protest songs against the Iraq war, disaster movies, films like Final Destination and Saw, there was this kind of attitude of "the world is a scary and hurtful place, we're going to make what we want because every day could be our last." So, you could easily make the jump from that pop culture environment to people writing fucked up fanfics that cross a lot of sacred social taboos.

But, of course, I don't necessarily believe that. There's been fucked up, "problematic" fiction since people started writing stuff down. Themes of incest, rape, pedophilia and cannibalism are such ancient taboos that they all appear in the Bible and Shakespeare. And there's been plenty of periods where Americans felt terrified and hopeless, from the crime-ridden 70s where major cities were falling apart, to even the nostalgia-tinted 50s where everyone was terrified of the atomic bomb. Fucking with people's sense of moral decency through fiction is older than any of us.

Part of the problem is that fandoms are natural hugboxes for the weak and thus the very thought of holding any one accountable to standards of conduct is literally -ist and rape.
