Correct, before 2017 the games were mostly either war stories or action movies. There was no mention of gender politics, identity politics ect. as none of that has anything to do with burly men going pew pew at each other.
Fun fact: COD WW2 was made by Sledgehammer Games, not Infinity Ward or Treyarch like most other games. Their previous title, Advanced Warfare, while solid did have the developers sperging out about Confederate flags(game released in late 2014 and had active content drops until 2015). It wasn't until WW2 when the mental illness flags entered the games proper, and in 2021 Sledgehammer Games released Call of Duty Vanguard, which made WW2 look like a serious wargame. If you've never heard of it, it's the game with gun gore that was so bad it was memed on for weeks due to devs not bothering to hire gun experts(since they apparently didn't want "white dudes glorifying violence" in their offices) and the game whose story is written by Sam Maggs, who made her characters into Marvel heroes with X-Ray vision and planned to make a trilogy out of them(Her direct inspiration seems to be Halo games, the new 343 trilogy not the old ones).

So yeah, you could say Sledgehammer Games don't have the best track record. WW2 marks the point in time when the games went downhill both due to lack of quality control and absolutely ridiculous microtransactions, as well as ID politics. MW2022/2023 had more LGBT flags at launch than regular emblems.
