ProtonMail, which markets itself as safe from terrorists, has revealed that it received more than 3500 requests for surveillance on users in 2020, only 700 of which it challenged (without revealing whether they had any success in that).

This came to light after a user was arrested based on ProtonMail's surveillance of his account on behalf of French authorities.

When Swiss courts issue orders for surveillance on ProtonMail users, the company will monitor IP addresses and other usage data to collaborate with the courts. These orders will not just be Swiss ones, but also foreign requests from the French and American regimes, among others.

The company claims that ProtonVPN is a totally different matter and that it can't be compelled to monitor users of the service (lol).

Remember, nothing is fully safe, and you should never reuse email addresses or send funny emails to people without taking care to protect yourself.

Reminder they sold him out because of truancy

That account was operated by the Parisian chapter of Youth for Climate, which Wikipedia describes as a Greta Thunberg-inspired movement focused on school students who skip Friday classes in order to attend protests.
I mean its fairly well known Protonmail runs it traffic through Israel, I treat protonmail like I do cock.li just for trash and spam account you cant trust someone who touts, were for privacy, then act so fucking shady.

Never ever this happened before and here we go again.

They have a Tor address. If the idiot had used Tor, this would have not happened.
Always. Use. Tor.

That being said, "encrypted email" services are invariably shit. Encryption should always be handled client-side. PGP is good for this. (as long as users exchange keys via TOR and avoid clearweb keyservers, as clearweb keyservers would compromise the users' IP addresses)

Less truancy and more because they were engaging in breaking and entering.

Protonmail also warns they may have to log and disclose IP addresses in their TOS:

Still, the general idea of always VPN/Tor/trust no one no matter how private they say their service is, is still good advice.

Good thread from a cybersecurity nerd giving more detail on this mess.

The eternal mistake of thinking there's such thing as true anonymity on the clearnet. Always take 10 minutes to think of what actors you're hiding from and how they could get to you on what services you're using. What are you doing that would make you worth the effort to go after?

Never trust blanket statements of "privacy".

obligatory "MO called it over a month ago" post
people have been calling out proton for being a honeypot for years
What the fuck, I literally just made a Protonmail at the recommendation of somebody here. Fuck.
Don't take privacy advice from this site, or Null either he's a shill.

The TOR address redirects you to the clearnet domain retard

Very true - though until now I wouldn't have guessed climate activism was one of those things, even when it crosses over into hooliganism. Isn't that Approved Behavior in the current year? Guess not.

From what I've seen so far, lopsided political treatment is worse in the US than anywhere in western Europe. Congress will defend literal car bombings if it's in the name of Dinduism.
