Prototype 2 basically killed the franchise. Not much to say really. Only way a 3rd game is coming is if they make it a reboot or a "true" sequel to Prototype and pretend that Prototype 2 never happened.

I thought prototype 2 was a fun game for the gameplay, and in that department, it’s better than the first. The story though is awful.

Nah, Prototype 2 is awful in terms of gameplay. It's a prime example of "dumbing it down for the masses" where they removed the variety of Prototype for a more simplistic selection of abilities. The story being awful doesn't help though. Still, I'm surprised that it didn't get massively shat on for having a walking black stereotype for a protagonist.

This. The sequel was hot garbage and pretty much everyone hated it, so unless they decide to reboot the series or pull a retcon it's staying dead. Maybe for the best after how they bastardized Alex.

Imagine teasing Pariah for half the fucking first game and how NuAlex was his own person and better than the original piece of shit Alex Mercer only for him to be cucked by a nobody on the next game. Fuck Prototype 2.
On another note: "NOT EVEN YOUR BEST MEN CAN STOP ME" was peak power fantasy moment for me as I glided around a military convoy.

Prototype was a hell of a game. The 1st one easily trumps 2nd. Because of the following:
-A world setting that progressively gets worse over time as you advance the plot
-You play as a monstrous dude that easily puts Wesker and the Thing to shame
-You FEEL the power as you level up
-An interesting variety of enemies to keep your guard up
-A story that unfolds quite well and a fun mechanic where you EAT people just to uncover a conspiracy and learn new skills
Really, its the story and the atmosphere that sells it. 2 has better gameplay but the atmosphere isn't really there. its always the same, no real changes. Not to mention the plot got changed from "uncover conspiracy" to "lol go chimpout at previous protag".
Can't help but think this would have been franchise was one of the many victims of the woke era. One more thing, Mercer in the original regenerated from a single cell. He was splattered after the ending. Its safe to say, there are multiple Mercers running around. The one 2 is just a shitty copy.
I unironically think that the franchise should be bought by Capcom just so we have the off-chance of getting Prototype 3 but with all the nasty BOWs as enemies. It would also have an outlet for people who enjoy the actiony side of Resident Evil. In fact, it would make for a fun point of perspective. A switch between monster and survivor.
