PS Quad: A Ticking Time Bomb?

Reports are coming in that PS4s are having major heating issues, and the company is starting to suspect deliberate worker sabotage at the FoxConn plant where they were made.

It may be something designed to shorten the lifespan of the unit, but with the hoard inside of 14 Branchland Court, imagine what a tinderbox that dump is, unless the piles of filth are soaked in dog pee to help prevent combustion.

(Mods, I posted this here because the subject is Chris related, but if this thread is in the wrong category, simply move it to the right area please. Thank you).

This is more of a general issue, I'm sure Chris isn't the only one suffering the consequences.

Why you post this in two places?

It got moved. Also WTF Sony?

Re: Could Chris' shiny new PS Quad be a ticking time bomb?

I think it's too early to comment on a PS4 that Chris probably can't afford to buy yet. He may get one as a Christmas present, or early Christmas present, but I don't think he has one now. He has the Wii U, and that system's more his speed anyway.

The hoard isn't gonna burn down. It's gonna fester until it's someone else's problem.

Went ahead and renamed the thread, but feel free to speculate on Chris's house burning down.

Re: Could Chris' shiny new PS Quad be a ticking time bomb?

The sabotage story is unsubstantiated, and games websites aren't reporting it for this reason. Technical sites have done breakdowns of the Quad's performance and put it's internal temperature at around 47 degrees centigrade under load. This isn't much really.

There are definite failures, but so far it's been put at approx 0.04% and this is ridiculously low for a mass produced electrical device so no doubt it will rise. The Quad's sold over a million units in the first 24 hour, so there's bound to be a good amount of vocal people who have a broken system, but in the grand scheme of things it's pretty irrelevant (so far, you never know)

I think Chris would be alright. There's bound to be more dangerous aging electrical devices in the stinking deathtrap that is 14 Branchland Court

maybe merge this with the ps4 thread, as it is becoming more and more chris centric

More than likely the claim a person sabotaged it is a scapegoat. They'd likely have been aware of heating problems prior to launch but decided to cut costs and ship it anyway. And so they can push it out as quickly as possible before the Xbox One.

What is with consoles and heating issues nowadays? Almost every big console now has some technical fuckup that kills it and forces you to buy another. The 360 had it's absurdly high death rate, the PS4 had a "Yellow Light of death". Whatever happened to when consoles were built like a tank and lasted decades? The N64 didn't require constant maintenance.

Older consoles were incredibly simple and had no moving parts. These days we have hdds, optical drives, and power hungry apu's and memory, all crammed into a box that's supposed to look unobtrusive sitting under the TV in the lounge. They're also generally powered an a lot more. If it's not being used for games, it's being used for netflix or something.

I've had my PS3 for years and so far no issue. The 360 powerbrick has been proven to cause at least one huge fire, I've heard reports of them overheating dangerously all the time and their predicted failure rate was something ridiculously high.

Didn't the PS3 also have heat issues?
360 was especially bad about it because they wanted to release the console before PS3. PS3 had some as well, I think, but they weren't as severe. With that in mind, it would make sense if PS4s are overheating as they were rushed to be put on the market before Xbox One.

Generally it's not so much high heat, but the constant heating and cooling over time that fatigues the innards of a console. I believe the type of solder more preferable for efficient electricals is against EU regulations as well due to lead content. Over time you'll get a dust build up inside as well that prevents efficient cooling, and apparently it's considerably worse if you're a smoker.

And now I'm glad that I'm too cheap/poor to get a console at launch.

There's very little reason to buy a console at launch. Sure there are launch titles and ports but you'd have to wait maybe a year or two for the really good next gen titles to come out. Plus the regular consoles will still be supported for a few years. Sony announced they plan to support the PS3 well until 2015.

Plus especially with this generation there's no backwards compatibility. So it's not like you can replace the console you already have. And the manufacturers will likely come out with a special console for a specific game that'll become uber rare in later years so you can sell it for a profit.

Backwards compatibility is less a concern of mine. Mine is more the lack of DVD player. I'm like the only person that still likes physical media but whatevs. Getting a PS4 meaning I'd have to buy a DVD player sucks. Regardless you make excellent points and pretty much why I didn't both to save up for a PS4.

Like Barb's dildo and sybian collection.

Well, I think its safe to say this is the end for Chris, RIP you magnificent bastard.

I've never had problems with anything I ever purchased but I don't sperg out and buy consoles (or any hyped, new thing for that matter) immediately. I'll purchase my life upgrade after New Year's and it'll be fine.
