That actually used to be the only way to make white light with LED's until true white LED's came out. In some situation they still use the RGB combination because true white LED's aren't as bright as their trichromatic counterpart.
LEDs also have different brightness depending on the “color” which is why some things like hue bulbs actually have FOUR LEDs - RGB + White to give white that extra ooomph. Red will be significantly dimmer than white because only one LED is lit.

Barneyfag is going to be absolutely fucking livid. If he needed another reason to not come to the states, now we have traffic lights that have not only green lights but purple also now. Oh this is the end of the world...

It's terrifying to me how normal it is to run red lights in the USA. Everytime I'm over there I see it happen seemingly routinely.

I mean, on the one hand, I like how fuck authority the yanks can be. On the other hand, maybe this isn't the time you know?
Where I am in the States we have the opposite problem. The light turns green and the moron at the intersection is too busy looking at porn on their phone or something to notice. The third most common thing I yell in my car on a daily basis is "The light's not turning any greener." The first two are "You fucking moron," and "Of course it's a woman." The sad part is I enjoy driving, just not the people I share the road with.

Are they attached to black boxes? Some bigger metro areas rolled out fancy new cameras about 3 years ago, iirc. Facial recognition stuff. It’s a federal operation though I forget which alphabet runs it. Also, could be the boxes that record gun shot data based on noise. They garner date/ time info when shots go off.

Well. The one in Houston is outside an industrial park (and also a daycare because Houston, but I digress.) The one in Bastrop is outside a power plant.

I'm sure I've seen others, but I can't say where.

Odd that it should only ever be the green part of the white lights to fail. I don't see blue-green or, uh, brown? Light? What does red and green make?

I almost T boned some grandma who ran a red light to make a right turn this morning

Yeah you can make a right on red but you're kinda supposed to come to a full stop and make sure no one is gonna be coming through the green light

If I hadn't been paying attention she ded

I get honked at constantly in Houston since I only make right turns on green.

I'm sorry that waiting fifteen seconds so I don't kill anyone with my semi is ruining your life. It is a tragedy for sure.

Red plus green light would make yellow light.

Sounds like the purple/ blue ones you’ve seen were in pretty desolate locations, the gun monitors are sometimes in outskirts, but more often installed in the heart of “ethnic ghettos.” Face rec stuff gets put up near major freeway entrances & exits.

Not an expert on this, but now I’m curious about the ones you mentioned. The gun shot monitors are almost always attached on black boxes, facial recognition w/ metal & white mountings & a round lens, but you’ll see a rectangular shape black box on most gun noise monitors. In ghettos, kids like to shoot both types w/ paintball guns. Pretty sure the dealers give them kick backs for doing so.

I will see if I can get away with taking a photo the next time I'm at one of these intersections. I really have no odea where the lights are attached, or if there are boxes associated with them.

So I passed through the Hollister / SH 8 intersection again. Both illumination lamps are purple.

However, just a bit farther, at the West Greens / Bammel N Houston, we have a very similar housing with a white light of apparent LED design. I guess "they're just broken" is plausible.

A little more of life's magic died for me today.

There is one in Bastrop at Electric Avenue and 21.

I drove through Bastrop (21W-->21S-->71W and vice versa) a month ago and I do not recall anything of the sort. I do recall listening to Null's stream on the Tranch during the car ride and I remember Null talking about distended alpaca vaginas at around the stoplight near the Sunoco, however.

That’s a Grimace alert, some giant purple ass may plop down on your hood at any moment, watch out
