Puss In Boots: The Last Wish - The Shrek franchise returns after 11 years

Also, its 12 years later and the animation seems cheaper.
DreamWorks is being overlooked by Chris Meledandri, who makes sure Illumination makes their movies in as little money as possible even though their movies make so much bank--probably because of said-money-grubbing practices.

Interestingly enough, DreamWorks has worked with a small budget before. Captain Underpants was made for about $40 million, and it actually looks good. I think there might've been a slight change in character design compared to the first Puss 'n' Boots, but there also is a different art direction going on. At the very least, it looks more appealing than The Bad Guys, honestly, which I swear to you doesn't look like a DreamWorks movie going off the trailer.

Bad Guys had a vore joke :c

The new movie seems to be taking the Marvel route and turning him into a dumb quipster.
It's a franchise full of stale pop culture references and subverting fantasy tropes. it's quips all the way down. I'm sorry but if you don't like quippy non-sequiters I don't think this children's movie about a talking cat is for you.

Please no. We already heard word that apparently a remake is happening and that's horrifying. Honestly, just leave Shrek alone at this point.
Shrek, imo, was lightning in a bottle. It was a miracle it was so charming and such a hit at the time it was created, I fail to see how they can do it again.

SharkTale reboot, but in the style of the new Fresh Prince.
I would totally watch this, Bel-Air is so unintentionally hilarious.

I would disagree with this. Shrek has had too much good content to be considered a lightning in a bottle. Honestly speaking, the Shrek series so far has had 5 movies and 4/5 have been good. Shrek 3 is the only bad one of the bunch, with Puss being mediocre, Shrek 4 arguably being better than the first, and Shrek 2 is widely considered the best.

Saw it yesterday while with the family for Christmas. I may have walked in with low expectations, but I walked out actually pleasantly surprised. The action was fluid and great, the comedy actually at least smile-worthy 90% of the time, and the parts with the Big Bad Wolf (aka Death) were genuinely chilling. Overall, a solid 8/10.
Also,
Shrek Cinematic Universe
@winterfag seems to be right on the money, as the scene right before the credits implies exactly this.

Damn, wanted to write about yesterday, but the Farms was acting up.

I agree though. This film is probably definitely within the top 3 Shrek films, maybe just beaten by Shrek 2 for me. Unlike the first Puss in Boots, I am glad this film was more within the Shrek universe. Having Gingy and Pinocchio appear was a delight, plus that scene of Puss with Shrek and Donkey. The only problem the extended universe proposes plot wise came at the beginning. Puss claims that he cannot go anywhere as no one truly loves him, but what about Shrek? Why weren’t him and Donkey options rather than the cat lady? Also you would think his adventures with Shrek would have given his life value? Otherwise, these are small points in a rather cohesive film.

I loved the new characters in the film. Jack Horner is such an asshole in the best of ways, making for a great traditional villain. Goldi Locks and the Three Bears were the best part of the cast. They were the typical found family story, but god did it hit hard. I genuinely felt for the family dynamic. I understood Goldi wanting to live with a “perfect” family. I also love that the bears continued to help her even after the reveal. They truly saw her as a daughter and wanted what was best for their child. I thought they would just do a liar reveal, but no, it was handled extremely well. If anything, them staying made the point hit harder, props to DreamWorks for this.

As for Puss, this is probably the best of an already 10/10 character. I bought his fear and his arrogance. This film was surprisingly serious and dark for a Shrek movie. I really enjoyed the mental breaks Puss had and the terrifying imagery the Wolf brought.

I actually saw the first Puss In Boots many years ago, and I was impressed with the fact that Puss can do a standalone movie. Even though I have yet to see the sequel, I’m willing to argue that much like Minions 2, as long as it keeps its promise by entertaining children while doing some Shrek Easter eggs here and there, then it has done its purpose.

I went into it not expecting much and came out of it pleasantly surprised like others have.

It doesn't beat the first two Shrek films for me, but it's right behind them in my eyes. The story was solid, the animation was fun and over the top and the cast was very well balanced and developed overall.

The first scene with the Wolf really sold me on the film. You could just feel the fear and panic Puss was experiencing as the reality of the situation he was in finally started to settle in. It helps that the Wolf himself absolutely dominates every scene he's in. I'm not sure if that whistle he makes is based on an actual tune or whatever, but I wouldn't be surprised if it ends up becoming one of the most iconic parts of the entire film years down the line.

The rest of the supporting cast was fun too. Goldilocks and the bears made for an entertaining B plot, Jack Horner was fun to watch, and Perrito and Kitty were great foils to Puss.

Avatar 2 makes a billion while this was a flop, we truly do live in a society. (:_(
To be fair Avatar is also setting up to be a flop and Puss released during America’s worst weather conditions and the holidays. I also think they botched the release as it released Wednesday last week, but advertisements said Christmas from what I could recall. When I saw it Saturday, I was surprised it was even out.

In a year filled with trash like Lightyear and Strange World, it's nice to see an actually good animated kids film. Cool action scenes, memorable and likable characters, especially the villains. If they intend on making Shrek 5 I hope they get the creative team behind this film.

It was alright, found some of the humor grating and some of the character designs, especially Death, were sus

What's wrong with Deaths design? I thought he looked pretty cool. I suppose you could consider him furry bait, but you could say that about any anthropomorphic animal designs. The only character designs I disliked were some of Jack Horners goons, who looked like tumblr rejects, but they were just canon fodder that were barely in the film at all.
