I read in a health magazine last night that after having colitis for 7 years, the risk of colon cancer increases. Significantly, from what I gathered. Haven't looked into it beyond reading that, but it's food for thought.

It does, however, someone with say, Ulcerative Colitis would be at a slightly lower risk for colon cancer than someone with Crohn's, but the risk is pretty high, considering the damage that Colitis does to the intestines. But at the same time though, we don't know 100% what kind of ailment she was diagnosed with, just some kind of Colitis, so it's possible that we may be way off on the original Colitis diagnosis.

Moreover, such people don't usually overuse anti-bacterial cleaning products, or any cleaning products for that matter, so the pathogens they are exposed to tend to be fairly unsophisticated and highly susceptible to even simple disinfection methods.

Would Chris's obsessive use of hand sanitizer affect this in any way, though?

Possibly, but unlikely. I mean, it would be possible that he may have a few more resistant strains of Staph on his skin (i.e MRSA), especially since he's actually out in the community more than Barb is. No matter how much your immune system may be developed, the fact that your butt has it's own microcosm of germs is still just an infection waiting to happen.

Unless he routinely bathes in it, the effect will be only minimal. Most hand sanitizers contain mainly antiseptics like alcohols or iodine compounds. A few of the more expensive brands (which Chris is less likely to purchase - HAND GOO IS EXPENSIVE!) do contain antibiotics like triclosan and various parabens. Those might lead to breeding resistant bacteria if it weren't for the rest of Chris' body, which doesn't get sanitized (unless axe body spray includes antibiotics). After "sanitizing" his hands, Chris reloads his hands with less sophisticated bacteria every time he primps his tomgirl hair or scratches his ass.

tl;dr: Chris is more likely to get cancer from paraben abuse before he breeds resistant strains of bacteria.

I actually just read an article on discovery.com that said there's talk of actually banning Triclosan because it may or may not be causing birth defects and some cancers, and actually contributing to the antibiotic resistant bacteria issue we have today. My issue with the hand sanitizer and Chris is, I would imagine that he doesn't have the insight to understand that if he's changing Barb's butt bandages, he needs to wash his hands instead of using hand sanitizer...not to mention the fact that the likelihood of him using gloves is probably slim to none, it's just dangerous.

Basically this is how it would (typically) play out:
1. Chris scratches ass, acquires E.coli/S.Aureus under fingernails/in crevices of hands/etc..
2. Barb needs butt bandage changed, Chris figures sanitizer = soap, forgoes washing hands in favor of the easier route of the sanitizer, which leaves his butt bacteria still lingering on his hands.
3. Again, I highly doubt Chris would wear gloves while changing the bandages, even if a doctor/nurse told him to, because a. gloves take time, b. gloves are 'expensive', and c. we're talking about a guy who routinely poops himself and drinks semen...I don't think I need to explain that one any more.
4. Chris changes bandages, transferring his butt bacteria into her butt wound, making the wound/dressing essentially an agar plate
5. Barb's butt would gets infected, which without proper medical treatment (usually being admitted to the hospital for 'debridement' and some hefty antibiotics) can lead to the butt bacteria entering her bloodstream.
6. If the butt bacteria gets into her bloodstream, chances are slim that she'd survive sepsis like that.

Sorry for drawing that all out, it just gave me an excuse to say butt bandages repeatedly

Please make use of the spoiler tag. People don't need that stuff thrown at them without fair warning. Edit: thank you.

I still believe Barb probably has a fairly robust immune system because the hoard would have killed her long since otherwise. Moreover her own rear end is much closer and in more constant contact with her buttock holes, and she hasn't suffered infection through that vector yet. Also since she and Chris are in such close contact regularly (spooning) it's probably safe to assume their individual microorganism populations are pretty much identical, so Chris tending her holey buttocks shouldn't introduce anything to her that she isn't already successfully fighting off. If Chris were to apply the same standard of care to anyone else, the outcome wouldn't be pretty in exactly the way you describe, but Barb is probably uniquely prepared to suffer Chris' ministrations with minimal risk.

Sorry about that, I edited the post so that it's fixed (still kinda learning the ropes here lol). The nurse in me just wants to scream out at just the thought of the bandages and the sanitation of it all, but at the same time you're probably right about the immune system stuff considering their house is probably lurking with bacteria that the CDC hasn't even discovered yet.

If she got Chris clothes from Goodwill, why did she get him toys from the store? Other than him being a spoiled brat.

When the Zombie Apocalypse happens 14BLC will either be the only place that's immune to the infection… or its source.

He got off-brand Legos.
