Quirky Indie RPGs - Depression is optional

Terraforming the Breach announcement:
Trials of Octoroks Demo:

Is the first game even an rpg or is it a rogueltie like into the breach? It's almost impressive how lacking in personalitiy it is.

The second game instantly reminded me of Shining Soul 1 and 2 on the gba and picked my interest

1720927186126.png

But then
>drag queen
>trauma
>gay shit

And then one of terranigma's composer is like they specifically trying to trigger me. There is demo so i'll bite the bullet. My other concern is that the combat looks like a single action game and shoulder button switch characters which would be offensively dumb on a modern game.

1720927544633.png

Wish me luck kiwis.

I have played the tako no himitsu demo and it aint great. You can play as 2 characters, the (allegedly) depressed clvie and milene + buuto.

1720933363679.jpeg

These controls are awful. Jump on X and attack on W? left bumber on A and right bumper on E? Why are those buttons not remotely close to each other? Either way i started with clive cause he looked like a melee attack in the trailer, then after finishing his demo i played mylene.

It took me 1 minute to break the game, cause the game starts on "FULL mode", which is bizarrely zoomed, so i put on widescreen and becomes playable, then i try to put it again in game and it break cause its so zoomed i cant see the menu anymore (not a good start).

1720933594747.jpeg1720933606590.jpeg
(Dont be fooled into thinking this look ok, note how i literally cant see my health bar anymore)

So clive's thing is that he has depression. You know he has depression because this npc says he is depressed (thanks, i really wouldnt be able to tell cause he shows no signs whatsoever).

1720933716530.jpeg

This npc says Clive might find a job at the capital but clive says he's probably not good enough to get a job there which kinda hit me a bit ngl. But then Clive makes a =3 face and says he'll go explore the groto cause he heard something happened and it sounds fun and i cant take him seriously. We can explore town a bit but it's not that interesting.

1720935642441.jpeg
(Implications of homosexuality or troon foreshadowing?)

Clive goes to the groto and soldiers tell him to leave cause there is a dangerous portal. Clive falls in and appears in a dungeon. We solve some liiiight puzzles in it.

Push a few blocks and jump a bit. Jumping in this game feels TERRIBLE. It's hard to explain but this game is not terranigma and definitely not Zelda minish cap. It feels like i have too much airtime for how little control i have, i almost died jumping a few holes that lead me to an optional cutscene, that is probably a flash foward.

1720934066809.jpeg
(This character looks absolutely nothing like mylene who we'll see later)
1720934154111.jpeg
1720934167768.jpeg
You literally just asked if they were milene and they're not lol you have nothing to apologize. Karan helps clive escape and the cutscene ends so we back in the dungeon.

Now we get to talk about Clive's combat. It sucks ASS. The combat in general feels bad but clive is the worst.

Everyone in this game has 4 moves. Tap attack, hold atk, dash attack and jump attack. Clive's move are, as the game explains:

tap-swing coat to reflect projectile
hold- block to halve damage (why would you ever use this lol)
dash - roll to be "dodge" (it's a lie, touching an enemy with the roll will actually give you 2s of invin frames)
jump- clive spins with the coat, removing projectiles around him

So clive has effectively zero damaging moves and the first enemies in the game can only be killed with reflects. But then the game bullshits that too, because if an enemy doesnt have a projectile, Clive will damage them ONLY if he hits them at the beginning of their attack animation, but even that is weirdly jank. I dont understand how the game will give me a tutorial of how money works but not for the fact clive can hurt enemies only via "parry".

This leads to a very passive "combat" where i'm poking my enemies and trying to get them to attack me, but if i attack too early it doesnt count and if i reflect too early or while the projectile is already deflected it disappears. The enemy hitboxes are also janky as fuck and i thought there was no contact damage until i suddendly took 2 hits at the same time.

1720934593873.jpeg
(Note how my coat is touching the turtle and doing nothing cause the hitbox sucks)

As we explore we find a mini octopus pet. You equip the pet and press a button to stop time and pick a spell from it, where it casts and starts a cooldown. This is very boring as, like i mentioned, it stops time in this action rpg. It can shoot a projectile or reveal something like enemy stats or a puzzle clue.

I also got stuck on a puzzle cause the clue said "waves go in different directions" and i had to search a youtube who uploaded a video 13 hours ago.

1720934986162.jpeg
He had the same idea i did, match the levers with torches on the wall, but it wasnt that, he solved it by accident.

We fight a boss that is a big dumb golem. First you reflect its shot to stun it then you cast the octopu spell. Then it summons flying hands that smack the ground and took me a while to realize i had to jump attack to "air parry kill" it (its not as fun as it sounds), but it's laser got stuck.

1720935150544.jpeg
Laser got stuck there. At least we get a super mode that lets clive... stop time and we control clive with coat on his back, with our attack changing to singular projectiles se we can kill the boss. I dont like how the "tank" character is so bad his supermode just turns him into a dps.

Clive suddendly has a post-boss clarity about his life

1720935342219.jpeg
(the laser being stuck there really sells the depression)
1720935355279.jpeg
(DID YOU?? All it took was hearing some shit happened in a cave to make you excited.)
1720935373166.jpeg

Well looks like clive got over his alleged depression... Then his side ends. Now we play with mylene and buto in some shrine. Their introduction is FAST.

1720935547445.jpeg
(i hate his design so much)
1720935565464.jpeg
(How did clive think that was mylene it looks nothing like her)
To save the world i guess...

Mylene then invades the shrine and we kill a bunch of people on the way. Their corpses stay on the ground and they dont respawn, but it's okay cause mylene called them evil cultists summoning monsters. The shrine is weirdly big and open and we can even jump on a well to find a second weapon for mylene.

Mylene kit is simple. She has a slow projectile, a charged projectile (takes a while), a dash with projectiles around her and a jump attack that marks enemy to give more super bar (that she cant use. The dash is useless because you will dash into enemies and take damage but the animation of her dash singing is cute.

Buuto is a normal attack. He slashes, he defends, he does a slide dash attack similar to Ark from terranigma that goes under stuff and his jump attack throws his bird a short range. He does not feel good cause his slash has half a sec of recovery and his dash will go inside enemies and if the animation ends with him inside the enemy he takes damage despite one shotting them (lol). Terranigma solved this by making enemies untouchable after you hit them.

There is a rock paper scissors system of creation > tank > swordie > creation that means only some characters can damage certain monsters. Buto wrecks the cultits but he cant kill the shadow creatures only mylene.

Another thing i'll whine about is how jumping up and down on this game sucks. These two pics for example, show jumps that are actualy impossible. I'm holding down on the first and the second i hold left but i cant go up or down because the "corner" doesnt register. You also soft teleport to the ground when you change height so it fucks up your momentum and feel.

1720935783852.jpeg1720935793252.jpeg

Again, terranigma solved this 30 years ago. Terranigma is also a fast game (even faster with 60 fps patch) and Ark feels good and strong and fast. But most of all ark has actual vertical range because you see his stick, Clive and buuto seem to have no vertical range cause their weapons only extends on their side sprites.

1720936246937.png1720936297784.png
(look at their feet in comparison to their weapons)

Pespective is also fucked up in this game cause shit is bizarre

1720936418946.jpeg
1720936624925.jpeg
I broke those vases despite being in a much higher elevation. I cant drop left cause buuto pushes an invisible wall except when there isnt but i cant drop anyway. I cant grasp perspective here.

And then we meet the leader cultist and he says the ancient heroes commited the original sin of killing a goddess and he'll fight us and... the demo ends for mylene too.

TL;DR:
-This game does not feel good as SNES/genesis/gba games that inspired it which i dont think is unfair to compare as those are 20-30 year old games. It's not hyper thrash or bad but it lacks polish and the fundamentals of dashing with double tap, move speed, sprite size, platforming, fighting and even sound design all feels weak and poor.

-I wanted to see some actual TRAUMA over here and all i got was clive being "allegedly sad over not finding a job". I know it's just a demo and maybe there is more but man, you gotta swing hard from the start. I'd rather play a pretentious/edgy game than one that is too afraid of saying anything.

-The pet system is so underutilized i forgot to mention. You get this chao garden room (the kickstarter even admits its inspired) where you convert monster gold into food and give to the pet so it get stronger but that's kinda it? The fun part of Chao garden is that stats and food are super complex but here there is no stats to manage, you just dump generic exp into them which is a bit lame.

-The soundtrack is fairly weak, except for the golem boss theme having this almost too epic for its own good theme where i can only assume was made by one of the guest japanese composers.

The game already reached kickstart funds so good for them but they'll need to work really hard to tighten this gameplay for release.

What happened with Vallhalla?
It was one of the first super troony games (even if AFAIK the developers haven't joined the -ack yet)
I'm not even sure why Kagami are bothering when they're going up against Slime Forest Adventure.
As for the second one, I assume the character portraits are there to obscure the stock RPG Maker MV gameplay (Yes, it can do that now).

It's hard to tell them apart, isn't it? Both of them are similar boring VNs about homos but least Vallhalla is pastiching the vague ideal of "Japanese PC Game" instead of just ripping off SNATCHER wholesale.
I remember the devs shilling for the Analog/Hate Story tranny dev, Christine Love. They're all part of that indie circle that keeps referencing each other.

Given that they referenced 4Chan in their game, and gave off the impression that they were """Based and Waifu-pilled", I kinda thought they weren't. They even won awards at 4Chan's game awards that year.

But then again, they shilled YIIK because both games share the same publisher.

If anyone was properly on both sites at the time I'd appreciate any input but my uninformed reading is that 4chan was a mega faggot zone while 8chan was still a thing. Arguably still as bad today but back then there was less self awareness.

This was around the same time /pol/ was becoming the main central for 4Chan's site culture, especially during Trump's 2016 campaign, so I dunno.

Since the Mother Direct had trannies cosplaying as the Beatles, I decided to post the games shown that at least have demos:
Dreamed Away got a demo:

Ah, that was only a few agos, here is the timestamp of the motherinspired games if anyone wants to see

https://www.youtube.com/redirect?ev...://steampowered.com/app/1381520&v=PHlB4wvYOnk

I saw Hermit and pig a while ago on the earthbound subreddit, it looks actually kinda funny but the voiced trailer is awful lol. I'll check the demo and some others.

I have checked 3 demos

>Hermit and pig

This demo was short and nice. The game is really as simple as it looks. You move around in small stages collecting mushrooms and fighting animals that turned agressive. The combat is very basic, you basically do 3 button sequence to do one of your 6 attacks, and 1-2 attacks are better depending on the enemy. For example, stomp is good against bugs on the floor, slap against moskito, slingshot against birds and stick against stuff you dont want to touch.

You have a timer to input them and sometimes the bar gives a chance to crit if you time it right. A few enemies will also hide in real time so you have to pay attenttion. It's basic and gets a bit repetitive but enemies are unique enough and its easy to its ok.

The fun part is that npcs are also "fights" where you must answer questions on a timer and if you fuck up you take "cringe damage". It's such a clever and silly thing that conveys how anxious the MC is as some of his choices are autistic, mean or panicky. The right answer is always the short polite one but getting one wrong will make the npc do a funny shocked face so its worth it.

1722139887321.png

I also find funny that he is literally a random ass old hobo that lives in the woods and i never seen a protagonist like this. He finds a shiny mushroom that seemingly gives him special powers and the pig eats one that lets him talk. Together they must find out why the town's food factory was bought by someone and fired all townworkers so they dont know how to find food.

It's not really a "comedy game", its mostly a wholesome silly game, it reminds me of earthbound in that sense. The demo had a little too much combat IMO but its fine cause shit is fast and ez and enemies are different and funny.

>MUSO

Game really wants to be earthbound, with the same intro of you picking names for everyone and waking up in bed with pijamas. Even the soundtrakc recycles the same beats, to the point it feels like plagiarism.

The most glaring issue of the game is collision detection being fucked as even just walking into a bush will have the MC fucking teleport around it and drop the game 3 FPS. Even opening doors take too much effort positioning. Feels like there random fps drops regardless. There HAS to be something wrong cause i never played a game that felt this terrible just to move around.

1722140679235.png

Either way the demo was, well, kinda shit? The combat is very simple turn based rpg other than enemies being earthbound-esque. MC has an atk buff and a team block. His school friend has a defense buff a heal and a double kick that misses 60% of the time. You can also draw a card per turn and next turn you can use it can buff a stat or raise hp but lower mp and vice verse. This is a cute idea but i'd rather just basic attack i guess.

But the lame part of the demo is that it starts weak, gets ok then ends weak again. You go to school and the globe on the class starts moving. Wow spooky so class is over. Anyway we go leave flowers for my friend's dad grave so we go through the woods fighting ghosts, trackers and corrupt cops. The mc hears a voice inside his side and we give the flowers. The demo ends. Not even a boss fight or anything shesh... Overall weak experience.

>Dreamed Away

1722209140897.jpeg
(The angry eyebrows look bad lol)

This game looks pretty and like mother 3 but i found the demo very boring. It's about a normal boy who has a nightmare and searches for his sister, then he wakes up but he's still a nightmare so he continues searching for his sister then he wakes up and its still a nightmare apparently, with the implication of a mystery.

In the dream we have an Undertale esque fight but shit. You dodge left and right from projectiles or you play dance dance revolution which is laaaame and repetitive. You attack like undertale but hitting the perfect middle lets you attack again, meaning battles are a bit unbalanced as being good lets you kill stuff 2-3x faster but attacking is boring. I dont get why another game is copying undertale but missing the point.

Overall Hermit and Pig had the strongest demo, to the point it almost feels professionally made.

1-MC and his pet are likable and proactive
2-The main conflict and goals are setup early and clear
3-Ends with a climatic boss fight and a cliffhanger with the pig getting powers
4-Characters and gameplay stand out enough to be memorable
5-All in exactly 1 hour of demo, good pacing

I'll check more demos when i have time, either way i forgot to mention there was also the fanmade paperverse direct last month with some indie trailers and demos.

Nothing too impressive, but i find funny how there is this very obvious mario & luigi ripoff with furries that failed to reach the kickstarter

There is also this new curator from the mother direct that tracks indie rpgs

Other demos i played

>Astromeda

I know the comparison is overused but man, this game REALLY wants to be undertale, to the point it's unavoidable here. The core combat and moving around is basically the same.

1722311425152.jpeg

So earth has been hit by an asteroid and humans evacuated to space, only to return a long time later and find out there is a new intelligent type of "bacteria" living in earth. 4 astronauts crash into earth and you play one of them who was saved the furry fox Per, so he guides you across puzzles and hallways as you meet quirky weirdos.
Okay, so the main problem here is that characters in-universe call themselves "Bacteria" but while most of them look like actual bacteria or aliens, Per looks like a fursona. There are also "wild bacteria" that choose to be violent and attack on sight, so the dillema changes a bit...

1722311657619.jpeg
1722312845449.jpeg

And here comes the undertale part, enemies can be killed or spared. There are actions that help sparing but they mostly lower the enemy defense so you can destroy their "shield" making them weak enough to run. When the enemy attacks you move around and jump in a 2d plane, but you unlock a literal CELESTE DASH early on that makes it a bit more interesting.

1722311933346.png
1722312822603.png

Okay, so we go around and meet actobacter the "funny mascot character" and explore more to find Per's i-pad and find out he setup those traps and puzzles to test our strenght because humans are superpowerful against bacteria. He finds out we know and fights us until we break his shield and he cries and gives up, giving us the first true choice here, to spare him or kill him.

I spared him and he told me he was testing my strenght hopefully so i would join him to fight the queen that turned evil and kidnapped our friends. He promises to help us and we hug him and it's a bit undeserved but whtv. The main difference from undertale here is that this isnt really about moralizing about PACIFISM because bad people are out there and self defense is justified, which ironically makes the MC look way more merciful.

1722312644496.jpeg
(This is definitely someone's furry oc)

Either way we get cliffhanger of the queen in a black screen and she straight up talks to "the person from beyond" (player?) and proceeds to put the game in window mode, keep punch the border so hard the rock hands go out of the window and close the window, implying some REAL 4th break shenanigans.

So yeah, this game is kinda of a lamer undertale but UT is severly hurt by having one perfect way to play (pacifism) while this has potential to be less pretentious and focus on tighter different routes that change depending on a few crucial choices, which would be the actual way to subvert the expectations here. I do find 4th wall/meta shit pretentious but it would help be different from undertale too.

And fun fact, this game looks a lot better since its kickstarter days lol.

1722314137155.png
(Per looking like he has downs)

>Dog Adventure Harmony

The name of the game is intentionally deceptive and i dont like it. This is essentially an omori-esque game, where you alternate between a kid's imagination and real life. The trailer makes the premise very clear, saying "The world is frightning so why not escape to your own". Meaning that yes baby, this is a quirky indie rpg about depression.

1722319147486.png

But in the game we start in the imagination land, as we play a blue gummy fighting creature drawings and searching for his dog (thus the title of dog adventure).

1722319266424.jpeg
(I named him viagra cause i thought it was funny i'm sorry)

The jokes are few and childish but i actually like them. Blue keeps mentioning he has no arms to do things but somehow pulls his personal phone (not even cellphone) in the cave. You see pieces of props like pencils and paper around, indicating it's a mini playground. We fight the dragon with blue and boom, we switch to Ashley, a 8 year old in her room.

1722319314818.jpeg
(THE PANDEMIC = C O V I D)

You control ashley a bit as the game shotguns a bunch of her frustrations at you. She can't go outside and her cat is missing and her parents are fighting AND she steps on a needle, which is given all at once and almost feels comical. The funny thing is that you technically fight the needle and you have to run away but in a shockingly pleasant twist, you can have ashley punch the needle until she nearly dies.

1722319424529.jpeg

I did not do this on my first run but i was so curious i had to replay just for it and it was worth it cause the game suddendly swerves into horror and i'm popping off inside.

1722319493528.jpeg

Ashley will not die but you get a red message saying she was hospitalized for playing with a needle, which is edgy as hell yes but i respect the balls to even let the player do this. Either you do that or run back to your room, we get a 6 year time skip and back to playland where blue is now LONG.

1722319676195.jpeg
1722319652407.jpeg
(The jokes are a bit less wholesome and more teeny now, making a weed joke, saying JK, LOL, WTF, etc. As if to imply ashley sense of humor changed)

Blue can crouch to get under gaps and effectively reshape his hurtbox in combat, which is extremely imporant. We hear a noise at the cave but alternatively we can go left and fight an optional superboss that is frustratingly hard. This boss is an angry statue that hates the world and wants to destroy it because it brings so much pain.

1722320029972.jpeg
(This obviously symboliszes Ashley anger towards the world)

1722320054587.jpeg
(Not even his most bullshit attack)

After beating him the boss calms down and says our smile reminded it that life has its up and down and we need to be patient and even if its dumb, it sold me how Blue is totally helping this girl with her issues. Either way i didnt know this was optional and i had to go under a gap in the cave so i was angry for losing so much here lol.

Back at the cave we reach the end and meet our dog, that suddendly morphs into a demon dog and starts a fight.

1722320306093.jpeg
(it attacks with giant 3d hand slams and bites)

Then after we beat the dog we fight a weird glitchy circle with eyes that drops purple balls.

1722320292852.png
(speedrunner footage cause i forgot to screenshot)

I do NOT know what this boss represents. Maybe it's amirror, maybe it's a drug metaphor? Either way we break it and we get a high effort well animated cutscene of the mountain shining, villagers looking and the world morphing into blue's face. Then we cut to... Teenage ashley laying on the floor.

1722320546844.png

And the demo ends with the dev saying it should take more years to finish (noooo). There are dark and darker ways to interpret this but either way i hate how sudden the demo ends as we dont get any glimpse of teen ashley at all so the "EDGY VS WHOLESOME contrast" doesnt get highlighted enough.

As much as i have issues with omori, the real life moment in day 0 are extremely good, with no words spoken and just Sunny walking alone in the dark to heat a stake while the atmosphere gives you all dark implications (where is his sister?). Omori demo is also 4 hour long which is an unfair comparison i know.

DAH simply explains out loud what issues kid Ash has and leaves you to guess what issues teen ash could have. The irony is that her playground conveys her mind better than the exposition did, but now i want to see her real life drama. Even the trailer only shows her arguing with a friend, but that's not in the demo.

>Ocean Skies: Wings for hire

This game was earthbound or papermario like but it's allegedly an Skies of Arcadia like which sounded interesting (i only playe the tutorial dungeon in SoA) so it's not that quirky at all but they got the tumblr fake anime artstyle.

1722394950275.png

The most notable thing here is that there is seemingly no foot combat at all. You can walk around in a village with bad camera but the combat happens when you fly around big islands and shoot enemies to start a normal turn based battle.

1722395188594.jpeg
(why is everyone in this village dressed like a pilot, even the kids?) I hate how the MC eyes look)

The combat is very simple but you can see who the enemy will attack, accuracy is around 70-90% for attacks and you regen some mp every turn (probably gear reliant). It seems every pilot specializing in one elemental "spell" list that all give secondary effects. All cheap spells is a DoT, all tier 2 have a debuff etc.

1722395273701.jpeg
(Flight controls are kinda janky and dont feel good tbh. It's fine for following shiny beacons but not for "exploring")

The story is old jrpg fare. The mc named Glenn comes from a family of explores and his father died 3 years ago in an expedition, so his mom is stil depressed. The start of the game is Glenn reuniting his friends and doing the final pilot test where we go out there and hunt some dinosaur birds, then we fight a "boss" who is the granny pilot.

1722395495359.jpeg
(Everyone hit granny with elemental shot and she took 3 different DoTs and she melted next turn)

After we win, the council tells Glenn to talk his mom out of depression because she still hasnt explained anyone what happened at the expedition and Glenn, who's a fairly lame "vanilla protagonist" says we should respect her silence. Then he visits his father grave and changes his mind, go yell at his mom to tell what happened but she doesnt and he goes to sleep.

Then boom, their town is attacked by THE ALLIANCE and the council thinks its Glenn's mom fault cause she must know something. Glenn's mom says they should escape and not fight, so she takes him away from the village with her own ship and they fly and fight a few soldiers (she is high level so she carries). But then a boss attacks and it seems unwinable (it wasnt, i got lucky and was totally winning) and she slow them down so Glenn can escape, telling him to not search his father (lol ofc he will).

1722395884002.jpeg
(The mandatory boss foreshadowing meeting)

1722395921263.jpeg
(Can you tell this man is evil?)

We get a few glimpses of the villains and one of them says shit like "You better find the Nexus or else you galaxians will see what happens" so there is probably one faction manipulating another here and Magnus might not be so evil.

Either way i did not like it overall. The main cast feels extremely bland and lacking in personality beyond "stock leader", "Childhood friend", "friend who likes the cool girl" and "the cool girl". The little i played of skies of arcadia made Vyse felt very shounen hero tropey (almost like a human Sonic) but he had presence to carry a scene, while Glenn is boring and his friends are pointless, and i know the main cast gets obcesnely huge from a previous demo.

Combat is a bit laaame. I dont like how every skill has long animations of the plane doing a flip. The demo doesnt let me gear anything so i dont know how deep it can be. 70% accuracy feels like shit.Visuals are painfully generic and i hate how every single person has the same aviator gear with zero flair. The planes look like shitty toys. Flying around is acceptable but not enough to spend dozens of hours.

Overall demo is fine on paper but i didnt like it. They need to improve the camera on foot sections and flying feel but either way the whole aesthetics and premise feel boring and bland to me.

There was also the demo for Escape from Ever after but i watched that on youtube and it looked genuinely great, very polished pretty and enemies have challenging gimmicks that punish certain strats. It looked better than born of bread so it's a paper mario like with potential.

Tired of demos for now, will see if i find a different niche rpg next.
