As a long-time MDE fan, that stand-up routine was in early 2013, long before Sam Hyde became known as alt-right. hopefully this is still on topic, but I find it somewhat sad to read this. There's a lot of edge to this, but fundamentally it's about tolerance and acceptance and everything being said I think is genuine. If I remember this video correctly, he actually genuinely talks to the offended woman at the end without any irony or desire to undermine her.

2016 really destroyed everyones minds, while there's lots of clips of Sam talking to Nick where they're being completely genuine with each other, everyone is so far down their own rabbit hole that they know any debate with people outside your politics is completely pointless. Right now the big thing is whether or not meat posts need to be hidden away because images of meat are actually images of dead bodies/corpses or some shit. I've also noticed the site isn't doing nearly as well as almost any other lemmy. Cumtown.org has a much higher user rate.

If nobody here knows, hexbear/chapo is running it's own fork of Lemmy that's behind everything else. It's horrible behind the scenes and it's why it's behind in features and buggy as fuck. It's also why they can't 'federate' which is when you combine multiple Lemmies into one. The entire project is a shitshow from beginning to end and it starts internally with the sites code.

All I know about Matt I have gleaned from listening to Chapo is that he is just an average person from the Midwest, dropped out of grad school, and basically became friends with Virgil, and felix through twitter (I am pretty sure they are the main brains behind chapo. Virgil in particular desperately wants to become a respected political commentator as seen by the fact that he is now doing that podcast that is essential Pod Save America for DSA types). I belive Matt is married but may it may be a situation like Will and his GF where a third is involved as I rarely hear him talking about her.

Honestly, Matt seems like a cool guy. He has his blindspots and his insufferable hipster pretensions like all the Chapos, but he is the only one that actually seems like an approachable down to earth guy who actually likes the fanbase. Then again he posts shit like this:

Chapo was such a successful podcast because they struck early in the Leftist podcast gold rush. Their first episode was during the 2016 primaries when there wasn't a ton of Left wing podcast that wasn't completely boring shit like Democracy Now. The fact that they did off the wall humor that was a little edgy by Leftist standards made them really standout. The podcast was actually funny for awhile and most of the humor came from making fun of terrible media pundits and the op ed pieces they wrote.

I think they have pretty much gone to shit after the Bern out of 2020 which they completely supported and were in denial about until the very end. Just listen to episodes from that era. Or better yet listen to them"solidarity forever" on the eve of the Iowa caucus. They really believed Bernie was ascendant and the working class (including Brooklyn podcasters) just needed to push him over the edge. They have kinda lost all credibility for me.

The main brains behind Chapo are Will, Felix, and Matt (and to some degree their first producer Brendon, without which the show would have been unlistenable). Virgil and Amber joined much later.

edit: actually I think Virgil was technically the last person to join.

Early years
A lot of Chapos older days are lost and I wasn't around. However, Chapo was quarantined on reddit in 2019 after the admins were told repeatedly to delete posts advocating for violence against police. Specifically it was quarantined for encouraging violence(which is pretty deserved, the admin was talking about shooting capitalists), requiring an account to get on. It was later banned in june 2020 in a wave of bans due to a change in rules, there was just too much fedposting on chapo for it to remain. Chapo is controversial to say the least, with even some of the podcast members (high as shit on codeine) openly expressing their disdain. Sadly a lot of posts a lost since the subreddit is banned and nobody archives anything.
