Microsoft is finally killing off its legendary Paint program after more than three decades.

The software giant announced it will drop support for the popular drawing app in its upcoming Windows 10 update.

It marked Paint as "deprecated" in a list of apps and features that may be removed from the software, meaning the app is "not in active development and might be removed in future releases".

Microsoft Paint has been a staple of the Windows operating system for 32 years and has been installed with every version since 1985. The tool lets users easily copy and paste, crop and colour images, or simply doodle and create drawings.

As of last year, Paint was still used by 100 million people a month, according to Microsoft.

The death of Paint comes as part of Microsoft's Windows 10 Fall Creators Update, announced in May. The update will bring tools that make it easier to switch between tablets, laptop and phones and augmented reality video and photo editing tools in StoryMix.

The Fall Creators update is expected to be released in the Autumn, although Microsoft has not confirmed a release date.

Microsoft is sidelining Paint following the release of its next generation Paint 3D in April. Paint 3D contains tools for 3D image making and, although it is inspired by the original, is not a direct update.

While Paint is not useful for complicated photo editing or design, its simplicity made it popular with early users of Windows and it has remained a feature of the operating system.

The updated Paint 3D is designed for use with Microsoft's Surface Pen, which lets users draw more natural and detailed pictures than were ordinarily possible in classic Paint.

Despite its simplicity, many users were still able to create detailed drawings and sketches using the simple tools in Paint.

Man, I remember when I first ever saw MS Paint. It was waaaaay back in the early 90s, my dad was still in the military, and we were shopping around in the military Exchange (for non-military peeps, that's where military could shop for goods at a discount). The upstairs had this big monolith section for electronics, and they had this huuuge long display of computers and monitors, and on half of them was Paint (they other half was probably Solitaire or something). I remember just how freaking cool it was way back in the day to use a mouse and have things change in real time on the screen. I know, sounds trite since basically I can basically build entire websites on a piece of technology no bigger than a poptart, but back then, this was a game changer.

So, that said, a "fond fairdoo" to MS Paint for all you have given to humanity as a whole, and may your eventual emulation be 1:1.

First Chester Bennington kills himself, and now MS Paint is getting axed. It's like everything beloved by goofy weeby dA kids is dying all of a sudden.
They probably saw what their stuff was being used for and, unable to do flips, did the next best thing.

Now how is the office hr lady supposed to make flyers for company potlatches and shit?

That's what paint was for anyway

I have 3D Paint on my Windows 10 machine. It's just as bad as old MS paint but now you can put fugly 3d cat's on your image.
Nm the hr ladies of the world are safe

Maybe I'm old, but to me it seems like a mandatory software for a MS computer. This is a problem for when it comes to taking screenshots easily, It was nice being able to assume that every machine will by default have pre installed software that lets you screen cap, crop, resize, flip, add text captions to, even convert file types! That makes helping people over the phone or through instruction that much easier, and now its gone, which probably means more shitty second hand software. it was useful software that i even have open right now for a post i just made here. I don't need to sit through a long boot up, or spend money on software for edits like that,to me, these are abilities that a computer should innately have.

it just seems so unnecessary to take away basic software. Sure you can download something else if you don't like their 3D paint replacement. But it should be basic pre-installed stuff to begin with. It's still very useful. If 100 million people are using it what's the use of getting rid of it? I just don't get these corporate decisions at all.

I give it a week before someone makes an exact clone of it

Leave it to the userbase to fix the problems that software companies create.
