I wonder how many people on SRS are serious SJWs and how many are just massive shitposters.
Way back when, like prior to 2011-12, most people at SRS were shitposters who were low key left wing / liked making neckbeards mad just by reposting their own words. It was hilarious: all you had to do was point out things people said, and they lost. Their. SHIT. Like an entire board full of lolcows.

The people who started SRS were goons, and the same wave of virulent SJW mods that afflicted SomethingAwful also modded SRS. One day it was fine to make jokes, and then there started to be rules about the jokes, and then people started self policing the jokes, until there was no more funny to be had. The rules about the jokes weren't to keep things fresh. I remember the day we weren't supposed to joke about Hitler any more, or use the phrases "literally hitler" or "lhitlerally" any more to make fun of people. It came suddenly. It wasn't because the joke was overused (which it was, and would have made sense to crack down on); it was because... I think because it minimizes the effects of the holocaust or something? I didn't even understand, but Hitler jokes were now bad, and anyone who made them should feel bad, and no one should question bans being handed out for certain jokes. And this just went on and on for different topics.

So nothing was fun anymore, and the neckbeards who impotently raged at SRS for no reason started having valid points, because the SRS mods started behaving like re.tards instead of being funny. They became what they were originally accused of: free speech enemies with a virulent agenda.

We just wanted to make jokes :heart-empty:

How many times have you heard the apologists tell you "you don't have to be a dick to be funny"?

I always respond that joking about an awful thing is one of the best ways to remove the power that awful thing has over us. All the terrible things in our history shouldn't be like fucking voldemort where you can't even say the name and then society never grows beyond it.

Saying "SRS was started by SA goons" doesn't tell the whole story. Yeah, SRS was started by Goons who found the people on Reddit to be awful people and started SRS to make fun of them, but it was hardly some Goon infiltration project to destroy Reddit. In fact, it got taken over by Redditors pretty fast.

It's trendy on Reddit to blame SA for SRS but it's not entirely accurate. SA might have started the katamari, but Reddit is the one who grew it to the size of a house.

I wasn't there to observe any of this history so this is just a guess, but I get the impression that the plots to annihilate any community that doesn't agree with them is mostly a post-gg development and it sounds like SRS's leadership just happened to be the same gestapo who ran SA into the ground.

it sounds like SRS's leadership just happened to be the same gestapo who ran SA into the ground.

If I remember correctly, basically what happened was that the controversy around /r/CreepShots came out, to which SA lifted its general ban on raids (I can count the number of sanctioned SA raids on other messageboards on one hand. It didn't happen often, but this was one of them). Thus, a bunch of the leftist "my way or the highway" types went over to Reddit to tell them how they're all pieces of shit.

Most of these people who transitioned over there during this time split their time between SA and Reddit. However, once Lowtax shut down LF because the same group of fucking psychos got the Secret Service calling Lowtax's house, they realized they no longer had a Marxist paradise on SA, and more or less moved to Reddit/SRS full-time. This also roughly aligned with the start of Gamergate, and we all know where it went from there.

So, like, the goons were definitely there, and always had been there, but you can't get 90,000 subscribers solely from SA refugees. It's always been more Reddit than SA except for the very very early days of SRS.

Oh it definitely wasn't "Project: Destroy Reddit" or anything like that. It was more like:
SRS's leadership just happened to be the same gestapo who ran SA into the ground.

Did they leave SA, though? Lowtax pretty much peaced out into an ambien and box wine haze for years, he gave control of the asylum to the inmates, which caused SA to become a barren comedy wasteland where nothing now survives. The Funny SRS -> Wait No Jokes Will Be Made transition did align with the start of gamergate. Without the jokes bans of that legion of SA & SRS mods, plus the rise of tumblr, I don't think we'd have ended up with the re.tard shitstorm that became GamerGate (both sides.)

tbh it was when they nixed the neckbeard emoticon because it was fat phobic. That was fucking hilarious, both the emoticon and that they capitulated to fat people.

Was it that or the r/jailbait violentacrez business? I seem to remember him getting doxed and his subs getting rekt first so I kinda assume SA was involved.

No, they really did leave for the most part. I mean, not ALL of them, but a good chunk did.

Most of the ones who stayed tried to infiltrate D&D, who was having absolutely none of it (on orders from Lowtax is my guess, nobody wants the Secret Service called, and especially nobody wants them calling twice). Not to say D&D wasn't leftist, because it was and still is, but as soon as anyone started posting the Marxist "eat the rich" shit, they got shouted down by people who didn't want the forums shut down. So they didn't have much of a home there. Some of them tried to fit in in FYAD/BYOB/GBS. I can't speak much for FYAD and BYOB, but the GBS 2.1 reboot basically killed the SJW presence in GBS because Lowtax wanted to go back to GBS being a shitposting paradise.

So I'm sure they're still there, but there's no real home to go on rants about socialism being the answer to everything anymore, so most of them seem to have packed up their political diatribes and moved to Reddit. The ones who stuck around tend to have dialed it back a bit.

Shit, you're right, it was /r/jailbait not /r/CreepShots. Both were violentacrez, but I got the subreddit wrong.

I think a lot of those 90k are dead accounts. I never see more than 300 active, though I admit I only go there very rarely. (Just looked and it was 145 active.) Might be interesting to compare comparably sized subreddits for a comparison, as crude as that might be.

To think, these types probably could've spared themselves a ton of resistance over the past few years if their behavior didn't make it clear with shit like this that it's still okay to fatshame/sexshame the right people.

That Nazism is now the preserve of people like Len Gilbert plays a part in preventing it from ever returning.

It wasn't, they were against the jailbait and racism from day one and one of their arguments was that those things shouldn't be allowed on the website at all.

edit: And unless I am mistaken this would have all been a year or two prior to Gamergate, which didn't start until we were well into GBS2.0.

Wait, SRS means Shit Reddit Says? I've seen people mention the sub before on the Ratking board and I thought it stood for Sexual Reassignment Surgery lol.

Depends on the context. Rani Baker for example has had SRS (Sex Reassignment Surgery), while Laurelai Bailey and Zinnia Jones used to be involved with SRS (Shit Reddit Says) and have not had the former SRS, and I kind of doubt Laurelai will ever have it because Laurelai likes to rape things with his penis.

Projection much?

Necroing the thread to ask if anyone ever found it curious how the 2008-2014 State Department, SomethingAwful, and the weaponization of online communities ever had links established.
It is quite the series of coincidences that the forum that hosted Helldump, Laissez Faire, and Foreign Service Officer recruitment threads was the same environment in which figures such as Vilerat, stonetear (Clinton's private email server admin), and r/SRS and of all things r/gamerGHAZI (Benghazi narrative regulation) all emerge from.

What the fuck is up with SomethingAwful and the State Department? We need a Sy Hersh on this.

Goons, including you, are utterly irrelevant fags to greater society with very few exceptions. Absolutely nobody in politics or government gives the tiniest of shits about them no matter how many idiots on that website freak out about CHUD INFILTRATORZZZZ.
