The problem I have with Zhukov being the canon winner is that it's really boring to have the Soviet Union be defeated by the Nazis, go through a huge warlord brawl where it's anybody's game, and then emerge from that as bog standard USSR.
To put it another way, let's look at the Sengoku Jidai era of Japan. Lot's of canidates for Shogun, but what if the "canon" winner is just the Ashikaga? You're like "okay, that Oda guy was way cooler, what gives? Why have a huge conflict only to end up exactly where you started?"
I'd be fine with Zhukov winning if his unification state was called anything other than the USSR. It can be commie, but it needs to go through immediately identifiable changes. Character development, if you will. But tankies gonna tank. They shill the USSR so hard they don't even realize that it's a bastard creation of Stalin and Lenin, and more or less betrayed the revolution by going "Oh yeah, the capitalist west... can't take them on yet, so let's be in a transitory statist period for... ever. Because the collapse of the West is inevitable, right comrades? :^)"
