The reason he sees himself like this to me, is because Chris is the final form of the "you can always be the best and you will always succeed forever" kids. Who was never told the truth about how life can be a shit time. Not to say im a complete nihilist but I wasnt raised to think that "ill never lose and ill always look perfect and be perfect". Of course Chris has a few more things affecting him giving him that complex but Barb (cause who else is there to blame) is very guilty for this.
