I was under the impression this site and its members more or less agreed that you shouldn't pay Chris. So seeing Null give money to Chris is a little strange. If you know he's going to honour the purpose of the money it a little better, but Chris never has come across as honourable.

While she may be taking this a bit too far, I do think Chris is extremely problematic by normal standards.......but then again, oh well, it's not like we have any standards when we laugh at him.
I bet Chris' internal response was, "It's the least they can do for ruining in my life and ruining my chances of becoming a mother in this universe!"

I have to agree, Null doesn't owe Chris a cent with anything (and no profiteering off his face on a coin is no different to using other people's likeness on all sorts of different products, since fair use law is a thing).
And considering what Chris has said and done about him in the past (and never truly learnt from his mistakes), he's under no obligation to be his errand boy and come to his aid.
But I can't change his mind, sure I can understand being a little sympathetic when you're the man running this site for years and you've seen a man's life crumble at the seams, but that shouldn't be paid for by Null when he already gets tax payer dollars that's keeping him afloat anyway.

Fair use law is only applicable if the content is transformative or used for educations and non-profit manners.
Plus, the law definition of Fair Use changes from state to state, and other countries have different Fair Use laws.
Null did things right by paying Chris for his likeness, he covers himself from any legal trouble by showing the receipts from the money sent to Chris.

I agree but still think Null is doing the right thing by throwing some money Chris’s way. It’s not like we are talking about a ton of cash here— Chris can probably afford a couple more toys from this at most. I think it is really comes down to the principle of the matter. This coin, and indeed this website, would not be possible without CWC being who he/she is IMO. For that reason it is perfectly fair to compensate this Lolcow for their years of service.

You don't do the right thing because the other person deserves it, you do the right thing to live up to your own standards. Null has clearly stated his feelings on using someone's likeness for monetary gain without compensating them and even if he wont suffer any legal/financial burdens by not paying Chris and even if that charity is squandered, at the end of the day, you either live up to your own values or you don't, I respect Null's consistency on this issue.

An actual exchange of value isn't just being ripped off by a tard. He has a right to the public exploitation of his image under the laws of every state, so if you use his image to make money, yes, you actually do have to pay him for it. It's called right of publicity. Making fun of him doesn't really require this, but if you actually use his image for profit, yes, he has some rights with respect to this.
Just as an example of the legal principle, Frito-Lay once offered to hire Tom Waits to advertise Doritos. He basically said fuck you, I don't do ads, being the godlike individual he is. Then they hired someone to fake his voice. So he sued. He won $2.6 million. The damages were reduced on appeal but not his general win on the main issue.

I can't be arsed to find the coin thread, but if it's still going to use that shitty, non-profile picture Chris specifically provided for it, it'll look like shit. Chris last sighting on his car is much more appropriate for a coin.
And about Chris getting paid, I agree he is entitled to it. As long as the payment comes in the form of pennies thrown at him between "SONICHU IS DEAD" prepubescent yelling

I don't know what the picture Chris provided for the coin was, but the final picture Null went with is indeed a profile picture (like most US coins save for the awkward new nickel) and all in all looks pretty great for what it represents. However, I do remember Null mentioning that Chris was not please with the final outcome.
