C64s haven't really moved in price since Chris was shopping around for one despite the retro video game market going insane. I know because I was also considering buying one at the same time he was. They range from $50 to $300 with the low end usually being broken or untested. I ended up buying my first Arduino instead because it was way more bang for the buck when it came to fucking around with technology and didn't require a dedicated desk. What has increased in price are CRT monitors across the board - especially the model that was sold by Commodore for the computer. I'm sure certain games aren't cheap. There's a C64 mod that will let you load games off of an SD card, but then at that point why not just run an emulator?
I wanted to sass everyone here for thinking that growing mushrooms is a gateway to hard drugs - but then I remember the times I went down to the South as a stoner college student and being surprised that most people who partied took an approach to doing drugs of "I wanna get fucked up". I was used to a delineation between stoners, people into psychedelics, people in to party drugs, etc. I've only ever spent a few weeks of my life in the South, but that's the only place where I've ever had to ask people not to smoke meth or crack in my bowl. I distinctly remember being at a house party back north up at RIT and hearing a guy's voice with a southern accent cut through the crowd and say that he doesn't even smoke weed anymore, he only smokes salvia... everyone I know who has smoked salvia, including myself, only did one or twice and had such a bad time that they advised others against really doing it for the most part. An average looking straitlaced middle aged dude outside a Waffle House in Tennessee told my fiends and I about how he used to dip his joints in embalming fluid to convince people he had the best weed.
This was mostly Tennessee and Florida, but I have no reservations that Virginia is exactly as bad. There's probably Amish teens out there that are more informed about the dangers of hard drugs than some Liberty freshmen. Maybe things have changed - I'm not a teenager anymore, but after mulling all that over, it's not a stretch to now think that Chris gets introduced to hard drugs now that he's left the nest.
The fent situation is super fucked. Everyone in the US likely knows someone who has died from it. You might not know that's HOW they died, because of the stigma, but it's super fucking common. If you can think of a young healthy person who just suddenly died or died in their sleep - they ODed. Fent doesn't disperse real well when it's mixed, so a group of friends can split a baggie of coke and just one of them might just start to OD and have minutes to live.
I recently did some ecstasy with friends. We got a testing kit from Dance Safe and we did what they essentially recommend: crush your pills with a pill crusher, mixed them up with water in a soda cap, test the liquid with a fent test strip, and then drink the liquid. We also had Narcan on standby. For coke Dance Safe recommended that you dry your coke in the oven... Not even someone who does coke every few weekends is going to go through that trouble. I've never done coke, but most people consume whatever they get immediately after scoring... because it's coke.
If you know anyone at all (that you care about) that does party drugs, it's worth having Narcan in your medicine cabinet because otherwise if they OD on fent they will die before the ambulance shows up. endoverdose.net will send you two free Narcan dispensers if you pay for shipping and watch a few training videos. Otherwise it's $40+ at your local Pharmacy because fuck you junkie.
