This quote is meant to be bittersweet, a sort of "Strive for excellence" while humbling us in the latter with the message"You're only human."
In Chris' case, The Stars are unreachable because they are trying to get as far away as possible.
This punchline is also bittersweet, bitter in its mockery, sweet in its honesty.
