Pretty much this.

There was a very sweet, very nice girl with Down syndrome in my school. She went to special ed and managed a 4.0 in all her classes. Got honor roll at graduation.

I’m not trying to rain on her parade. She was a very sweet girl and I’m 100% sure she deserved those grades. But she wasn’t taking advanced math or giving level science and English.

I knew of Special Ed. classes that taught using textbooks meant for a lower grade from a year or two below the one you're in.

She was taking classes that taught her how to cook microwaveable meals for herself, how to clean up after herself, daily English lessons, and overall LIFE skills she would need to succeed with the handicap she had.

Based on the homework we’ve seen, chris was in special ed classes with a few other classes mixed in. Like Spanish. I can see those teachers giving him a break on grading. No one wants to fail the exceptional individual.

Guess it just shows that high school honor roll means absolutely nothing once you graduate... unless you’re stuck in the past.

So really just a normal public school that just happens have a Special Ed. classroom for him to be in most of the time. The Spanish class or anything else he took like Art would've been his only chance at "mainstreaming" given the circumstances (like being water boy on the basketball team).

For a lot of special needs people in the U.S., "mainstreaming" means you go to a public school like normal people and not a private school or a "special" school. Like there are schools specifically made for people with all kinds of handicaps.

Chris went to a public school and was put in some normal classes with normal kids (like Spanish), so he was "mainstreamed". Most (if not all) public schools have a special ed department that basically teach handicapped kids how to live in the real world as best they can. So things like calculus/biology/chemistry aren't really necessary; however they also want to give these kids a chance ,so the ones that are able will also be put in a normal math or english/reading class.

Often this comes out of how far you're willing to go in being able to be mainstreamed, which usually means staying out of trouble and continue to do what you're told, too often I've known plenty of kids who simply slink through the program and never rise above their level.

When I went to my high school's open house a few months back, I happen to go to the library to seehow much was changed. Aside from the overabundance of computers/tablets and a graphic novel/manga section (obvious) I happened to notice a movable cart with children's picture books on it and was told by the librarian how they were for their disabled students, and I guess that makes sense to provide them but I kept thinking to myself how they'd never do that a quarter century ago (at least when I was there)

It is rather sad how bad he is at that word. I still think of the "Japan War" essay he wrote and the teacher's comments over how much he cited from a book to make it, barely not even touching on specific points that woould never be overlooked in a proper WWII essay.

Between Barb and Chris they get what? $3k a month? I could see that being paid completely on bills and they STILL would have to beg. They have a lot of debt. So instead of paying bills, still begging, and not getting toys. Chris is getting toys, paying bills, and then still begging.

To Chris this is logical and he still gets what he wants.
