Murphy Redford grew up as a son of a war veteran, who's father had also served in the army. When Murphy was little, he would listen to his father's and grandfather's stories of their times as snipers, taking out enemies from incredible distances and shots that only seasoned marks men could do with practice. While growing up in the Kentucky South, his father would take him hunting, teaching him the same skills that his father passed on to him. This would be his motivation for joining the military.
After years of training, Murphy was assigned to the Sniper Team Zulu in the 108th infantry regiment. Soon after, the Chinese invaded the resource-rich Alaska, starting the Sino-American War. Murphy and his team were at one point deployed to the chinese controlled city of Fairbanks to liberate it and Fort Wainwright to use as a staging area for a push towards Anchorage. As Murphy and his team went through the city, he saw bodies of his fellow soldiers and civilians lying in the streets. When he reached the city square, he saw a group of chinese troops holding civilians and soldiers hostage. With a sense of justice in his mind, Murphy gripped his rifle and began picking off each and every chinese soldier he saw, allowing the hostages to escape with his teammate being KIA. Murphy knew then that he'll use his sharpshooter skills to protect civilians and fellow soldiers alike during the conflict. His actions allowed the US to retake Fairbanks and joined in the subsequent Battle of Anchorage.
During said battle in 2073, he was to provide cover for a strike force poised to find a way through the chinese defenses guarding Anchorage. The strike team was ambushed and Murphy provided covering fire to allow the remainder of the strike force to retreat. He stayed behind, picking off more communists while hiding in the snow. When he saw an opportunity to escape, he took it. Running through the forest, he was knocked unconscious by an artillery strike. Waking up at base camp, he was informed that his service was up and was to leave the fight.
Upset and disappointed, Murphy settled in Sanctuary Hills near Boston. Shortly after moving in, he met his future wife, Nora. A while after dating, Murphy and Nora married and had a son named Shaun. One day, after getting ready for the day, the air raid sirens blared through the air. It was nuclear war and the end was approaching. Thankfully, Murphy's military service allowed him and his family entrance into Vault 111, escaping a nuclear blast that destroyed much of the surrounding area. However, Murphy and his family were frozen in pods and were left as such for an unknown period of time. When Morgan woke up, his wife was found murdered and his son, missing. Feeling anger and pain, Murphy left the Vault for the ruined bostonian landscape. Digging up his grandfather's sniper rifle and military gear and uniform, he set out into the wasteland with one goal:
Find his son and kill any that kept him from his goal.
