Chris humiliated himself. Most of the early "trolling" was really more environmental enrichment. For example, most people don't live in a world that includes with men in pickle suits. Chris does. Once that happens, the hospital can limit his communication to approved people like lawyers and social workers, and the internet will truly be cut down.

Please get it out of your collective mindset that there are all these state mental hospitals with nice empty beds willing to take in your crazy auntie/ cousin/ adult autistic.
Since the 1990s state mental hospitals have been shutting down for a multitude of reasons. Pick anyone of the below and you would be correct:
1. Changes in public attitude towards institutionalization
2. Scandals / oversights/ abuse in institutions
3. Taxpayers demand their money be allocated elsewhere
4. Staffing shortages and crumbling buildings
5. Outpatient care is more cost effective and ethical

On a great day where all the Virginia state mental hospitals are fully staffed and ready to accept patients....there are only about 1,200 beds.
Population of Virginia is about 8.5 million.

Since this article was published 6 months ago, several state hospitals have resumed TDOs. Temporary detention orders are for 1 to 3 days of evaluation to determine if a person is an eminent threat to themselves or others and enough time to set them up with outpatient services. Whether that person follows up with outpatient services is up to them.
But what about private hospitals?
Most private hospitals don't have psych units anymore which were only for short term/ acute care and evaluation. In other words: TDOs. Why? Most psych patents don't have insurance or if they do it's Medicaid meaning having a psych ward is going to cost a private hospital money and increase liability neither of which is desirable. Plus nobody wants to work psych so staffing is always an issue.

It's a combination of it just being super gross, and all of Chris' sexual interest being directed at women in their teens and twenties. Chris liked the women most men like, and he didn't have the highest of standards so was willing to compromise on stuff like weight/appearance. But pretty much all the women he ever hit on were young and fertile, and notably none of them were older than himself.

Which is kind of sad because if he was willing to compromise on age, he could have probably landed a successful date with someone from the "over 50 crowd", which is why Null found it so plausible and didn't stop to connect the dots that it was actually Barb.

This is why I also believe that Barb was likely complicit. Women like Barb will slut it up with a youngish man in a heartbeat, and Chris just had to overcome her aversion to incest -- which was probably not too big a hurdle given their hillbilly nature.

The cost of living is high IMO in the area. $1300 to $1400 for a one bedroom 973 sq. ft. apartment is pretty common in Virginia Beach. Also in Virginia you pay property taxes twice a year on your car. The newer the car, the higher the tax. Generally the wages in a psych facility are 2 to 3 dollars less an hour than what you would earn working in a regular hospital. Due to mandation (forced overtime) the pay probably equals out. Truthfully 2 types of people work in psych: Those that really love psych and those that are money hungry. Psych facilities will let you work as much overtime as you want. I've known staff that willingly worked 48 to 60 hours every week.

Another thing about psych that is a turn off to some is the lack of technology. If you go into a regular hospital they try to stay abreast of the latest technology and treatments to stay competitive. They most likely use computerized charting. Not psych facilities. It's all paper charting which is tedious, prone to errors, and easily damaged or lost. Psych is truly the red-headed step-child of the medical field.
