There's too many people that circle Chris that have made it clear that they intend to milk Chris for everything they can get out of him. I think it was very good lawyering. I just don't think Chris is really the best example of someone who couldn't get a fair trial with the jury he got as a result of press coverage, because there really isn't wall to wall coverage of it, and any prejudice to the jury is more from word of mouth, as it is, as Heilberg points out, a rural community.

Look how they forced Derek Chauvin on trial in a community where pretty much every likely member of the jury pool already hated his guts, was convinced of his guilt, and on top of that, even admitted they were afraid of the backlash if they didn't convict.

Chris is in nowhere near that bad a position.

Chris mentioned last May that Heilberg was rarely talking to him, and no doubt nearly had a stroke when he realized that Chris told the cops everything and there was nothing he could do to "defend" Chris from the big boy charges he got leveled up to last summer. The deferral is all but admitting Chris indeed did the nasty deed in all its gory details and Heilberg's only route now is to try his hardest to mitigate Chris falling his ass hard.

He can function to some degree and isn't an immediate threat to others due to ineptitude, not illness, Chris is almost certainly just be thrown from one person to the next till he ends up homeless.

Heilberg might also not care at all and is doing the bare minimum. Some do that when their clients are clearly guilty. At this point, Chris is just a hopeless case.
