Original Bort Sampson. DO NOT STEAL!

It looks like Chris owes Sega an apology
Well then Sega can take a number and wait in line with everyone else.
1) the original Sonic design really reminds me of early animation characters like Bosko, Buddy, and Felix the cat. Kinda sorry they drifted away from that.
It is a shame, but I suspect the sprite graphics resolution limits they had would have made the level of detail impossible. I believe this is why they switched from blue arms to tan in the first place. Blue arms wouldn't have been distinguishable against the sprite body.
2) if sonic was supposed to have a band, that means Christian and the Hedgehog Boys is not a very original idea. I just cannot fathom that concept.
Every comic book and video game character back in the '80s and '90s had a band. Donkey Kong. Mario. Archie. All of 'em. Where else do you think Chris got the idea?

DK and Mario had a band?
Yeah, but they split up over creative differences. Kong felt that his own contributions were being overshadowed by Mario's, which given that Kong was the main songwriter, was pretty galling. Mario's own songs were frankly uninspired. The time when Luigi stayed in the studio for a month was the final straw. Unfortunately, Kong wasn't anything like as successful on his own.

I checked through the various CWC threads as best as I could and didn't see this mentioned already, so I thought I'd drop this little factoid about the creation of Sonic. Not only was he originally designed as a rabbit (I guess a speedy rabbit makes sense), a warrior, and as a clown, but guess what?

Check out the arms. What color are they?

Yeah, but he didn't end up having blarms, so...?

DK and Mario had a band?
Yep. With toys.

And it gets even worse. Every video game character in the '80s and '90s had a band, but Mario had a furry ska band. As in what the actual fuck, Nintendo?

It's like the only thing video game designers could think for their characters to do after clearing the castle or saving the princess or releasing the animals from their robot prisons was rock out, often with their erstwhile opponents.

I remember hearing about that factoid of Sonic originally being a rabbit. It made sense, but the real reason why they went away from the rabbit route is that the Sega Genesis (Megadrive for people outside of North America) did not have the processing power to handle the animation of Sonic the Rabbit's ears, so they had to make him some kind of creature that wasn't so big eared. I guess they went with the hedgehog because it made him getting into a ball for the speed dash kinda logical since it was something that hedgehogs did.

Beyond that I don't know. Despite being an Aspie I didn't care for sonic, since I didn't own a Genesis, and I knew few people who did (the SNES was the absolute king where I grew up).

I don't think Chris really knows that much about sonic other than being 'buddies' with the main character. For all his obsession and fixation on stuff, he's not that knowledgeable about them.

Chris consumes media exactly the way they are intended. He watches the shows and plays the games. If he really likes it he watches the shows a lot and plays the game a lot.

Some people who get really into a particular franchise go beyond that by participating in forums, researching the history, learning about the creators etc. It's not the majority of people. But if you look at the subset of people who use their fandom of some franchise or another as part of their identity, it starts to become most people.

Chris is rare in that he considers his fandom of Sonic, MLP etc. to be really important to him, but he doesn't seem to do much except consume them again and again.
