I thought toddler clothes generally cover both equally and only the color scheme or licensed cartoon character implies said toddler's gender.

Yeah... that's not true. Listen to people give introductions of their dads. No one means that their dad is "a bastard and i hate him" when they are trying to introduce their dad to other people (unless you mean abusive but that's a different kind of introduction, and of course if you're just saying this to further your political agenda then that's ridiculous)

"Dad" is a child's word. "Father" is what he is called when you don't live under his authority anymore. When he's a bastard and you hate him, you refer to him by his first name exclusively. "Hello, I'm Red Sun and this is my father" is how an adult would introduce someone to parents, while "Hello, I'm Red Sun and this is Dave" is a cutting affront to a man's ego and status.
