It's probably not, unfortunately. That's a common mentality behind white guilt, that white people need to repent toward black people because their ancestors owned slaves.

I don't think I've ever seen them come up with an explanation for the white people who came from Europe after slavery was abolished, though.

From what I've read, it doesn't matter since that white person still benefits from a modern society that was built by slave labor. So they must do what they can to fight it.

The way people talked about it, it seemed more subtle than I thought.

Yes, there are themes of 'racism' and stereotypes in the film. But at the end of the day these are still animal characters and it shouldn't matter which ones represent which human ethnic group because no matter how you interpret that aspect of the movie, the message is still the same.

What's stupid about the way tumblr is handling it is the fact that they want to assign specific ethnicities to specific characters. I guess they make whichever character they thought had it the roughest a 'POC'. Because fuck everything if it's not portraying a 'non-white person' as the real victim.

Well, it has to do with Sephiroth's name coming from Kabbalah. I remember some people getting up in arms about the appropriation or some crap, many years ago.

If we held every significant historical figure to the standards of today then more time would be spent on chastising their faults than celebrating their accomplishments.

There are ways in which we, as a society, are less morally upright than our ancestors. For instance, many communities didn't have to lock their cars or their front doors, because they could feel secure that nobody was going to break in; now, it's practically suicide not to in those same places. For another, we now have law that a person's house can be forcibly taken from him and sold to a corporation because of prospective tax revenues.

But to the self-righteous, that doesn't matter. All that matters is that those people in the past didn't believe just like they do. Reasons don't matter. Circumstances don't matter. Conform or be unworthy.

The scary part is that it makes money. I've had thoughts about shitting out something for them to latch onto just so I can have some extra spending money, but the closest I can get to drawing is Sprite Comics....maybe if I say I have some kind of disability that prevents me from drawing it would help?
