The guy that runs Humans of New York gets shit because a few years ago, he took a photo of a black woman with a Hasidic Jew, only to find out after the fact that he'd been sexually harassing her. He put the photo on his blog, and it sparked outrage that he took the picture at all. He took it down and people were outraged he was silencing the story of a black woman. Tumblr's ugly anti-Semitic side reared its ugly head and people have never let go of the grudge ever since.

Biggest problem with Tumblr fandoms is that they think they're super special awesome enough to be the sole fanbase on the internet - heck, even offline. Because that's how fandoms obviously work.

NGL, I kind of agree that it would have been cool is Booker was like, half or a fourth black and having to deal with the bullshit that was Columbia. It would have added an interesting angle to the game if he was experiencing all of that as an outsider just running an errand. Really, that game was nothing but wasted potential all over the place, beyond just that shit.
But I guess that wouldn't have worked with the TWIST ENDING.

Yeah, because Tumblrites would totally accept a complex transgendered character. I'm sure they wouldn't rip apart any designer who tried it.
Fact is, interesting writing comes from a character who is not flawless. He/She/Fuckoff should have flaws, failings, and issues, because that's what makes them human. Nuanced characters should make mistakes. If your character is someone you identify with, and who also happens to be perfect, it's probably a Mary Sue.
So no, Tumblr, Ken Levine should not risk his career by caving to your demands. This is mostly because he'd have only two options:
Option A: Make a nuanced, interesting main character who also happens to be nonbinary or whatever. Make the character human, with faults and feelings and make them occasionally fuck up, painting a sympathetic picture of a person who is not perfect, but tries to be good. You will then be promptly guillotined by the Tumblr crowd for imagined crimes.
Option B: Make a perfect, positive main character who happens to be in a minority group. Make the character an expert at everything, and make sure they always win. You will then have created a boring, shitty protagonist. You will be praised by the tumblr crowd, but your game will not sell, because it'll suck.
