Yep. 100% sure this happened.

I believe this is a parody.

This sounds more like the plot of a mid-2000s Lifetime Original Movie, but 21k people on tumblr can't be wrong, right?

i highly doubt that some random netflix show is causing people to suddenly go emo

either they've been repressing it for so long and they found a canvas
or it's emotional transtrending

Thing is, this was a book first before it was picked up by Netflix.

You didn't hear ANYTHING like this when the book was originally popular back in the mid-2000s. And I'm pretty sure that book would have been slapped on a banlist or some kind of parent boycott shit and we all would have heard about it if it had been causing a suddenly significant spike in self-harm and suicidal tendencies.

So suicidal people should just shut the fuck up and quit whining, nobody wants to hear their shit.

In fact, it should be illegal for them even to describe their experiences.

"Social justice" at work again.
The worst part is how they describe it like it's a good thing. Like "check me out guys, I'm depressed, look how sad I am".
There's only so many times you can say that it's pathetic.

I never see why people make such a fuss over sad fiction.
"B'awww, I read about this girl who killed herself and now I want to do it too!" they say, in their lofty middle class homes.

People who generally have no real problems of their own identify with this stuff because they know their lives are boring, meaningless and shallow and they, too, want to have problems of their own and suffer 'n' shit. It's been that way ever since Goethe wrote The Sorrows of Young Werther.

TBF, this series is generating a LOT of coverage in the mainstream media. Here's a message I posted in the "Thread Requests sticky..."

I'm curious if anyone else thinks a Salt Mine thread on 13 Reasons Why might be warranted. Maybe in Events and Happenings?

Stuff like this is everywhere...

Psychiatrist Demands Netflix Remove '13 Reasons Why From NetFlix

Psychologists warn '13 Reasons Why' could inspire copycat suicides

Netflix’s 13 Reasons Why is an irresponsible dramatisation of teenage suicide

City Warns School Principals About Possible Effects of '13 Reasons Why'

Facts About Teens, Suicide And '13 Reasons Why'

And on and on and on... There must tens of thousands of articles on the series by this point. And I haven't even tried looking on Zuckerbook or Tumblr or (god help us all) FanFiction.net yet. Watched the first two episodes last night. Eh. Not horrible, more like some sort of 1970s/1980s After School Special, now with bonus swearing and mysterious dude in red Mustang driving around listening to Joy Division.

I guess a mark against such a thread is the fact that there's not (so far as I am aware) any sort of defined community around the series, unlike Sherlock or SU or a lot of other things people get wound up about. Might by more media hype than salt mine in that case. Dunno.

I say go for it.

I'm gonna pass. I don't think there's enough salt here really. Just shitty GIFs and bad fan-fiction. (I read a 13 Reasons Why/Teen Titans Crossover[FF.net], plus one where Louis Tomlinson from One Direction stood in for Hannah Baker[Wattpad, of course.]. I'd apply for the time spent reading those things to be put against time in Purgatory, if I believed in Purgatory.) All the sperging seems to be coming from adults, curiously.

Having said that, I did find this:

...and for a second I wondered if I spotted an an hero. Nope. It was just her (I always think of Tumblrites as female) last post on this particular page. I'm sure I'd find lots of shitty posturing like this if I dug more, but, eh.

Also, who the fuck thinks light gray text in a tiny font on a white background works? Half of Tumblr seems to default to this. Must work better on a phone than on a laptop for reading, or maybe I'm just stuck in a text/background binary unable to reason beyond my heteronormative patriarchal outlook or something.

They're just literally so retarded they fail to realize the utterly unreadable shit they post is read by nobody as a result.

This is why the tumblr threads here are full of the turds that float to the top of the tumblr toilet. They either just randomly post in a readable font against a background you can read, or they're slightly more intelligent attention whores, and actually deliberately use something readable.

The amazing thing about tumblr is that anyone reads it at all. I rely on the people here who import this shit, because the sight of tumblr themes makes me fucking vomit. It makes myspace shit look normal. You'd have to be retarded to choose that as your net home.

Am I a bad person for thinking that if a bunch of dumbass teenagers really ARE killing themselves over a fucking Netflix show, the world is probably better off without them?
