Yes, the tourism industry is shady as fuck and often takes advantage of the locals, but that's true of literally anywhere, even in the U.S. (Disney, anyone?). This is not some concept unique to "POC" countries.

Gays can get married it's not illegal but it's extremely frowned upon and you can get disowned by your own family for that. And knowing how Japan is with family people will hide the fact that they are gay\trans for the sake of that.

Gays can't really get married. Civil unions are legal in some prefectures, but that's all. It's actually one of those places where if you're trans and straight, you have more legal rights if you come out (changing your documented sex and all that) than if you pretend to be gay.

Japan is in an odd place with gay rights, as it stands. Unlike countries founded on, say, Christian or Islamic values, there's nothing in Japanese tradition that says being gay is wrong, so there's a lot less noise coming from both the homophobes and the gay rights movement. As a result, there's a lot more public ignorance and general insensitivity about the subject, but hate crimes are also much less prevalent.

That's how it is in my city. My neighborhood is all pill poppers and heroin addicts now their dealers are moving to where they live. The addicts aren't complaining, though.
