perfect segway to the community/tags i came here to post about, #saneism/ableism, #mad pride, and any variation of #actuallydisorder like #actuallynpd!

theres multiple types of empathy, cognitive empathy (ability to understand WHY someone feels something), affective empathy (being sad when another person is sad) and compassionate empathy (the desire to help and support others). this entire post is trying to be educational but is just. wrong. most people with aspd have the ability to understand why people feel things, they simply arent affected by others emotions or have any desire to help others, leading to callousness and manipulation. the confidence they have really tops it off and captures one of my favorite things about these tumblr posts, they are written with such conviction and moralfagging while being ridiculous

i love how everyone under the aspd or npd tag is really aggressive and hostile whilst attempting to prove npd and aspd dont make you a bad person

And I kinda get the point behind “sanism” as a word/concept, but it also feels redundant when we already have ableism. I’ve also seen that term being pushed in a fandom for a book I like, so there’s already some annoyance there.

like sure mentally ill people are stigmatized and treated like shit, thats a fair point but when you look through the tags you quickly realize these people are just blaming society for their shitty behavior and refusing to take acountability for their own mental health. sure you didnt choose to have a disorder, but youre choosing to take pride in it and identify with it instead of recovering. like that narc post, all they want is to call people ableist and play victim while completely ignore the victim blaming they are doing! i will never understand making a mental illness or disability your entire identity. tangentially related, i want to make an in depth post about the "medically unrecognized disorder" community, it is such an absurd group that perfectly satirizes tumblr identity politics and the problem with making disorders your personality.

A 2023 study of 87 adults diagnosed with autism spectrum disorders without intellectual disabilities found that 28.7% scored above 90th percentile narcissistic traits, and people who had higher amounts of autistic traits (test used was the RAADS-R) tended to have higher amounts of narc traits (test used was the NPI). Autists also scored higher on traits of vulnerable narcissism than the normative population's scores. (Autists with intellectual disabilities were not part of this study.) (x)

Additionally, a review of the available data in 2021 found that autists (with or without intellectual disability) may have a 62% coocurrence rate with having at least one personality disorder. People with a childhood-onset neuropsychiatric disorder (includes autism spectrum disorders, ADHD, and learning disabilities) had high rates of co-occurrence with at least one personality disorder. Bringing it back to your post and the question I quoted: tumblr is full of autists and there is significant overlap between autists (who tend to use words literally and avoid using the same term two different ways) and people with narcissistic traits. I would bet you anything that the people in those screenshots have a lot of traits from both. This is not an indictment of the character of every autist ever. It is an indictment of people, including autists, who don't want to get better or stop hurting others.

they frame themselves as a supportive community but all they do is create an echo chamber and it becomes a very anti recovery and competetive space. people want to be the most mentally ill and most oppressed and it becomes their entire identity, if people involved in these spaces recover theyd lose the identity and community theyve created around their mental illness. lots of anas feel that anorexia is their only identity and dont know who they are without it, and i think that mindset applies to most other disorders whether mental or physical.

with physical disabilities it becomes competitive because people want to be special or feel validated in it, say for example the munchie classic hEDS. someone with mild hEDS may join the disability community for support, but the constant exposure to it and others with it creates an echo chamber. whether conciouslessly or unconciously they will focus on their symptoms more and more and start to identify with their disability. they will see all these posts about mobility aids and how neccessary they are and start to think they need them, despite the fact mobility aids are often detrimental to hEDS paitents due to deconditioning, thus worsening their disability and furthering them identifying with it. the constant demonization of doctors in these communities also leads to stuff like this, their doctor may have said they dont need an aid but their tumblr group will say that doctor is ableist and uneducated. if this person tries to improve their condition they risk losing their disabled identity and community.

i think a lack of self identity and community is what makes these people so hung up on their mental illnesses, disabilities, and even the gender bullshit. at our core we want to relate to others and be supported by them, these echo chambers fill that desire perfectly. i also think thats why we saw such a rise in munchies and genderspecials during lockdown, people were isolated and desperate and had too much time to think without real human interaction.

at least SS has a recovery board, i think the problem with tumblr and reddit is that they conceal themselves as recovery or support groups, but are more akin to a suicide cult, whereas SS is upfront about what it is and why it exists and allows people to change their minds without losing their community.
