Frankly, it's more "subversive" nowadays to have actually naive, bright-eyed superheroes as this person to be "so many". Actually, there was a part of the canon where Bruce and Hulk did get separated for a while, but Bruce needed the Hulk so he wouldn’t be pushed around constantly, and Hulk needed Bruce because without him, Hulk has no way to calm down or stop destroying everything.
