This is an easy one, they feel the need to staunchly defend this because by applying autism to fictional characters out of nowhere due to their behaviour, it helps reinforce the idea that they're autistic just from a self diagnosis judged by behaviour.

Fuck it, I'm doing this.

I've been in this kiwi hell for years, and I've come to accept that I will never "get this".
I don't get "coding" in fictional characters.
It is a fiction. It isn't real. How can something be gay, autistic, straight, trans, whatever, unless it is a specific part of the story? How does one assign sex traits to a drawing? How can we make a definitive statement to determine the neuropathology of a cartoon character?

I'm not even memeing, it's a legit question.
These people are arguing about a nonexistant nonperson's mental problems.

I legit got nothing here. It's beyond the pale. We have people with a legitimate investment in whether or not Batman or Mario or the Michelin Man is gay.

Batman isn't real. It's not that I don't have a counter argument, it's that there isn't an argument to be had. He doesn't exist. He can't feel anything, because he's a fiction created to sell comics to sad nerds like me who like Batman.
We've hit a point where we are having an argument about the nature of our imaginary friends.

They literally have nothing else more interesting going on with their lives.

That's really all there is to it.

They're boring individuals with no friends, no lives, no hobbies, and probably no jobs. They have nothing better to do than to seek attention on the internet, seek out ways to get more attention on the internet (such as self diagnosis with mental illness using the most standard and stereotypical descriptors for said illness), then project their attention seeking onto fictional characters so they can start drama with people they disagree with.

This is what happens when you're an unlikable twat who's never been told 'no' by Mommy or Daddy.

If you're a fan of something, it can be fun to try and read into subtext and extrapolate ideas about that character that aren't presented in the text. My example would be that L from Death Note is presented in such a way that he has a lot of autistic traits, so a lot of readers interpret him that way using the text presented as evidence. Audience interpretation and engagement is the foundation of fan communities, after all.

But this very reasonable and valid game is now turned into a contest where people simply declare a character they like as being gay/autistic/trans/whatever, and don't even bother playing the game where they look for evidence to support this theory. While most readers would read a text and come to a conclusion based on elements that are present and apparent, these people work backwards, and decide that Batman must be gay and therefore cherrypick any evidence of this that they can. Sometimes, there's no evidence at all, they just declare it so, and you're not allowed to argue with them because REPRESENTATION and MUH OPPRESSION, while these very same people outright ignore works that include the types of characters they want.

There's also an element of them just wanting to piss off nerds who are actually familiar with the source text because it makes them feel good when they make the "wrong people" angry, like they're doing something right. So they're further encouraged to do it.

Hence the current state of fandom discourse.

I agree that it's fun to imagine things that could fit in the narrative but that might haven't been included in the comic/show/etc because there just wasn't time/space/occasion the author could have made it fit in currently. But people just doing it because they want to and thinking they have a right to get pissed when people disagree or say they “just don't see it” is obnoxious as fuck.

And yeah, most people will ignore shows/anime/whatever that have LGBT/any other oppression group they complain there isn't enough representation and will choose instead any other type of media to thirsty over, including children's cartoon, and imagine said characters in gay relationships. Then they'll complain about being gay-baited or whatever it is they call it.

I really don't have a problem with shipping or headcanons or whatever as long as people aren't presenting it as something politically righteous. If it's literally just a non-canonical idea that people entertain, it's silly to act totalitarian over nothing more than an interpretation. It's sort of like people who have conflicting readings of a religious text and maintain eternal hateboners for each other over it.

I’m in agreement that these idiots take it too far, but
Coding was a practice in visual media since film, but gained prominence under the Hays Code, particularly with gay characters. You couldn’t have gay characters unless your entire film was a psa against homosexuality, but if you didn’t want to do that, you could still kill 2 birds with one stone and tell your story while giving the villain traits stereotypically associated with gay men, in order to get the audience to believe the villain was gay, making homosexuality the root of all evil In the story, thus meeting the requirement for the code, all without even technically having a gay character. It happened a lot with Tony Randall’s characters in the 50s. As for Racial coding, think OG Panthro from Thundercats. He’s got a broad, flat nose, thick lips, and is voiced by a black va. He’s clearly meant to be seen as similar to a black man, even if the character is an alien cat man.
The thing is, coding is typically done in order to get around restrictions, and is also really fucking obvious that they’re playing by technicality. The thing with trying to assign coding to characters with sperg tendencies is that it’s often unintentional on the creator’s part, and also most of the time now no one has to get around any requirement to have a gay/black/whatever the fuck character; if they wanted the character to be seen as such then they would write them as such. But, tards be tards, and projecting is a constant
