There is a tendency among leftists to demonize anyone remotely connected to the Confederacy, regardless of their actual actions. Don't have receipts but I have seen instances of leftist redditors insulting Mark Twain for having served in the Confederate army, and accused him of whitewashing his own past despite him having lived in both the North and South, and personally being anti-slavery.

Also, despite hating America in pretty much every other historical circumstance, leftists will be weirdly celebrative of the Union and of General Sherman attacking the South. They ignore the part where Indians sided with the Confederacy because of the U.S. treating them badly, they outright deny that the Indian Wars (led by Sherman) were an extension of the "Civil War", they hate White Southerners for existing even though most of them never owned a slave, and they worship a "Union" that by their own claims, allowed racism and segregation in its own (northern) territory up to the present day, and yet will demonize the South for those very same things.

Once you realize their opinions are motivated by pure hatred/spite/propaganda and not reason, then it becomes easier to ignore them

Anyone attacking Mark Twain is garbage in my opinion. I don't care what the reason. His actual experience in the Confederate armed forces was ridiculous and pathetic and luckily he faced little real danger.

Same with Ambrose Bierce, who served in the Union, insanely courageously, even charging artillery and taking a grievous head wound, then going right back to fight again after a few months recovering from something it took a human monster to survive.

Despite having himself suffered grievous injuries fighting the Confederacy, he was absolutely disgusted with the corruption and villainy of so-called Reconstruction, a true American disgrace where instead of just taking the W and reuniting the country, the Union chose to humiliate and plunder the South.
