The really fascinating thing is that all this started because an anonymous officer suggested the light shirts they wear make good shooting targets, and so far there hasn't been a single study on that aspect of his/her concerns. On the other hand the study did reveal that people were more likely to react well with an officer wearing a darker shirt, and oddly might get more aggressive with one in a tie.

Well Kiwi's, do ties make you see red when dealing with a national police force?

Totally misread this as someone putting a man in an oven and saw something about hipsters and thought, "Wow, are Canadian hipsters so awful they're trying to do a hipster holocaust?"

To answer the question, if I saw a policeman with a man bun, I wouldn't take him seriously. Not sure about a tie though. Don't think I've ever seen one with a tie outside of movies and video games.

Actually in Toronto some of them still do. Even under the vest. The RCMP don't anymore but did back in the time of black and white photos - looks like the 40s but I can't be sure. I did have to google search 'toronto police uniforms history'.

On the street they seem to not wear ties, so I'm guessing it's an office thing but it seems strange they'd have vests on in the office at TPS HQ.

Not that I go downtown all that often anymore but the uniformed Mounties on Parliament Hill always wear flak jackets so far as I can remember (unless it's winter and they have their RCMP winter jackets on) and I've lived in Ottawa over a decade, so, yeah, I can't remember off the top of my head ever seeing a necktie on one either.
