The first trailer for the film of the book is out. A bit bummed it doesn't really explain what the plot is.

Starts off strong as a kind of near future Willy Wonka styled story about some higher functioning autistic teenager whose dream it is to find the hidden prize stowed away in the distant reaches of the now entirely virtually simulated reality that is the internet, called the OASIS, left there as a kind of easter egg by its creator. The whole setup is strong precisely because you get a kind of feel for the setting as a world that is very clearly shit all across the board and where nobody really has a hope or a chance of impacting it in some meaningful way, so the whole of humanity has just sort of secluded themselves into this fake reality to ignore how shit life on the outside is when they aren't barely mustering the ability to survive. Our protagonist, hopelessly outgunned and underequipped, nonetheless pursues his search for this egg among the rest of his generation with the full intent to use the prize to make a better life than what they've got...except you quickly find out this kid is literally a genius because he's so genre savvy in a world that is now powered by near total cultural masturbation of the 80's. Enter an evil corporation that totally wants the prize for themselves because of reasons that are never especially well explained beyond the most base level of greed. Enter our hero's plucky companions who are several shades of tropes and stereotypes wrapped up into a nice package of diversity ( one of whom is his actual waifu by the end of it, never saw that coming ). Pad out the entire story with virtually every possible piece of 80's icon you could ever conceive and make sure every page is gonna explode with the creator wanking through his self insert how cool that time it was; congratulations, I've saved every one of you $20+ getting either the book or seeing the movie.

You're welcome.

Dumpster fire in the making; BTW, thanks for making that more clear to me, @KidKitty. This trailer just looked like Gamer 2.o - pretty easy to make a pass on just from that feeling, honestly.

The book was pretty mediocre, and gave the strong impression that it was written by an eighties fanboy who never bothered playing any of the eighties computer games that they so desperately wish to sperg about. I don't reckon I'll be bothering with it.
This.
I read a few excerpts of the book. It was written for shit, like somebody just listing stuff.
"Mazinger, the robot called Tranzor in the US, fought alongside Ultraman, the superhero." style stuff.
Reminded me of the walls of lists from those Pooh's Adventures things.

The trailer seems like a 80s/90s version of this

I hope they have a fun time tearing it a new one. Doubtless the CGI looks good, so if at least it's a pleasant visual and audio experience then there's a good mark on the record; but what do those even mean these days when anybody does it?

It sounded interesting, though a little cliche, when Thug Notes did it's summary but I've been burned before (I could not stand The Goldfinch and it's pretentious prose. Trying way to hard to sound deep). I'm not sure if I want to read it, but in all likelihood the book will still be better than the movie. It usually is (minus Willy Wonka and Clockwork Orange off the top of my head).

A coworker was talking about the trailer dropping yesterday and said "yeah you won't really get it if you're not familiar with like 80s arcade games" which told me immediately how lame the movie was going to be if it's just all references and nothing else.

Pretty much the only reason to read the book too. It sure as hell isn't for the plot or the writing quality.

It's too bad Disney already made a video game nostalgia film with a good story that everyone loved and even Kanye West could relate to on a deep and personal level.

and also before that they had another video game nostalgia film that was semi decent.

But dorks with too much money will pay opening night to clap at a galaga reference so it'll probably get a few sequels like Ready Player Two: I KNOW WHAT THAT IS or Ready Player Three: I CLAPPED WHEN I SAW IT
