Ready Player One

I'm totally going to trust these reviews and the movie isn't out for another week or so:

A dollar will make you holla for sure.

Oh, Iron Giant, what did they do to you???

Time to vote with my wallet and stay the fuck away, then. Thanks for helping me save money, Kiwis.
Apparently the reason why they use Iron Giant here is because they aren't allowed to uses Ultraman because of the whole Chaiyo's right over Ultraman and what not
http://ukiyaseed.weebly.com/ukiyase...firmed-not-appearing-in-ready-player-one-film
In a Q&A interview for the upcoming Ready Player One film, Ernest Cline, who wrote the original novel and the screenplay for the film confirmed that Ultraman will not be appearing in the film.

Prior to the unveiling of the trailer, he revealed that "We weren't able to get everything we wanted, but we got the mass majority of it. There are some differences between the movie and the book, but I was involved with all those changes."

After the trailer played, around the 19:30 mark of the Q&A, Cline revealed that they replaced Ultraman with the Iron Giant because they cannot get the rights to use Ultraman in the film. It is because of a legal battle between Tsuburaya Productions and "another company from Japan" presumably, UM Corporation. Both companies want Ultraman to be in the film, "but the rights could not be cleared because of their legal battle over it", causing them to find a replacement for the Giant of Light. As for said legal battle, Tsuburaya won the case. The film's director, Steven Spielberg suggested to use Iron Giant as a replacement for Ultraman for the film, which he is okay with as he is also a fan of the Iron Giant.

Oh btw
He also confirmed that a sequel for the original novel was currently in the works in the same Q&A.

You can always pirate it and watch it for shits and giggles.

Since I don't want to give money to it, yeah - otherwise, I refuse to waste any time with it. I'd rather watch an actual Good Bad flick (as in something with merit to it) than this souless cultural cash-grab.

I'm definitely in the minority here because I think the movie looks pretty good. The first few trailers were alright but the most recent one with the pure imagination song kinda got to me. I didn't see mother! due to the poor reviews going around and when I finally did I loved every second and wished I had have watched it on a big screen. The visuals for Ready Player One look good, yet weak, in a believable-imperfect virtual reality way. I dunno. I'm a faggot and I wanna see the delorean and Kong and all that good, cheesy nostalgia.

This seems to be a big contention with a lot of people out there. If there's any consolation, I would say this is not THE Iron Giant we know and love from the movie, but another giant sent out to destroy planets anyway (since that is teased in the film anyway). At least that's what I'm going with.

And yeah, such a shame we can't have Ultraman here.

I’m just back from seeing it without reading the books or anything and I thought it was okay, it’s kind of ironic that the thing stopping it from being a decent - good movie is the main draw of the constant pop culture references which at times was REALLY cringeworthy and the characters were like an autistic person talking about their favourite subject (Although I did like seeing a Gundam on the big screen even though I knew it was just ‘Member’ Gundam?’ pandering and the audience I was there with liked
the Chucky doll but at times there were so many different characters it was like watching VRChat).

Actually I am kind of convinced whoever wrote the script/book has genuine autism since in the scene where
the protagonist has his remaining family get blown up by a bomb he has zero emotional reaction to it, he just goes back to what he was doing as if nothing had happened and the way he thinks the female character will like him is to dress like his favourite fictional character and hope she gets the reference.

The end message of stop using the internet so much and go outside sometimes nerds was good though but I really hope nostalgia franchise crossovers isn’t an omen of things to come, it’s like the next step up in awfulness from franchise reboots.

The Iron Giant is not an AI, it’s supposed to be someone’s homebrew creation they made in the VR simulation and it's human piloted.
If you want to know about the Iron Giant.

For what it's worth, Ready Player One currently has a higher Tomatometer score than mother! (80% vs. 69% and I'm surprised mother! got that high).

I remember mother! getting some savage negative reviews but clearly that wasn't everyone's opinion. I haven't seen it yet but if it's on Canadian Netflix, I might watch it sometime. I might even watch Ready Player One eventually but it would be at best a second-run theatre viewing (like most of the movies I watch if I see them on the big screen at all) because my movie budget is extremely tight and there are other movies out I'd rather see that I haven't seen yet.

Didn't the book also have Evangelion? Were there any EVA units in the movie or are they a "the license wasn't available" casualty like Ultraman (replaced with Iron Giant as was previously noted)?

I just came back from seeing this also. It was flawed for sure but it was fun and I quite enjoyed it. I'm not a film purist so I don't expect perfection from a movie that's trying to frame nostalgia in an adventurous, cheesy way. It's cringey and campy here and there but I felt like it was trying to be. Didn't read the book either so I can't comment on how well or poorly it translated to film. There were some missed opportunities to really reach out to the audience which was definitely a shame because they showed they were absolutely capable of doing it
there's a scene where the main characters go into the shining and the race with Kong and the trex from jurassic park were fucking cool
I wish there had have been more of that.

Anyways it's not some art piece. I don't think movies have to be either great or terrible, and I'm guilty of being able to appreciate movies for what they are and aren't (hated Gone Girl but I liked it for what it wasn't). I didn't go into this hoping for the movie of the decade and if I felt like it sucked I'd say don't waste your money. If you're looking for a cg fest that doesn't take itself seriously and you just wanna have fun you'll probably really enjoy it. If you want flawless excellence that meets every standard you have this isn't it. Overall, I'd watch it again for sure.

Mother! in my opinion is a 10 out of 10 cinematic experience. Not a 10 out of 10 movie because it's not perfect and not everyone will like it, but it did what it set out to do perfectly. It's a mindfuck totally. The acting was great and I think more people should watch it with an open mind instead of expecting "something" from it. It's a type of truly special, stressful, bizarre treat that really doesn't come around a lot. Made me feel like I was living in an anxious, confusing fever dream. I think it's a shame it did so poorly.

Eva couldn't make it because it's booked to show up later this season on Shinkalion, the children's train robot cartoon that's going to feature guest-star Hatsune Miku.

I give the book a 4/10. There are some very interesting ideas/sequences, but the characters seem a bit sloppy and generic in their writing, and a lot of the dialogue is 'cringey.' Those two Japanese characters are literally samurai who are obsessed with honor, and Aech being a token minority seems really forced.

The movie is better than I thought it was going to be. It was a bit better than the book.:

A list of a few things in the movie, good and bad:

There's ads for Pizza Hut and Doritos at the beginning of the movie.

There's The Shining in the middle of the movie for no raisin.

The bad guy's avatar looks like this guy from Heavy Metal:

They changed a lot of the story from the book to make Wade less selfish.
