Inspired by a post by @_blank_ in the Unpopular Opinions thread about reviewers praising the new God of War for its ~beautiful cinematic graphics and mature story for mature gamers~.
I thought it would be good to have a thread to share some critics/reviewers we find insightful and interesting; people who stand out from the know-nothing wannabe film critics, sycophant fanboys and outright shills who make up the majority of games journalism. So here are a few recommendations from me:

A lot of people have probably already heard of this guy but he's definitely worth including here for anyone who hasn't. If you don't like to sit through multiple hour-long videos you should check first a few of his shorter ones, maybe Stephen's Sausage Roll or No Man's Sky. His videos on What Remains of Edith Finch and SOMA are also great.

This guy has a really in-depth series of videos on every major 3D Mario game from Super Mario 64 up to 3D World. Pretty much everything on his channel is worth watching but I think a recent video he did on Sonic Dreams Collection will be particularly enjoyable to Kiwis, if you watch only one video out of this whole list it should be this one.

The rest of the guys in this list produce more approachable content with heavier editing, videos that won't eat up half your day by the time you're done with one of them. His videos often talk about specific concepts within a game or spanning a genre rather than analysis of a whole game. Here are two to give you a taste: Playing the Scripted Set Piece and How Cover Systems Ruined Shooters.

I enjoy his villain spotlight series "Devious Intent." He makes a lot of videos about Japanese games and he also makes some pretty good videos about anime which some might find interesting. He did this great video talking about publisher-related mishaps that resulted in Prey 2 never seeing the light of day.

This channel is basically a comprehensive history of Naughty Dog's games over the years and how their focus as a studio has shifted with time. If you played any of Naughty Dog's games at all you'll probably find that interesting, though there's more on the channel, this is the meat of what's there currently.

That's all I've got for now, I might add more in future, I'm sure there are more I've forgotten, but that's a good start.
The Sonic Dreams Collection video is a must watch though.

GGmanlives is an Aussie who reviews many retro fps games. The reviews take around 10 minutes and can be pretty entertaining to watch (Australian bantzmaster). He also provides useful information about compatibility issues and other bugs with games.

He also reviews mods for games, including the infamous Moon Man mod for Doom. If you either want to get a good game recommendation, or just take a trip down memory lane, he's an overall solid reviewer.

Sid Alpha Can't remember his name, guy tries to stay apolitical and some times spergs out about shit that happens on the gaming world.

Top Hats & Champagne German living on Aussieland, pc master race, doesn't do reviews but it's fucking hilarious when pointing out reeeetarded shit on the gaming world.

Tarmack is a relatively decent source of video game news and criticism. He doesn't really do game reviews but he'll do nice industry wrap ups and does a good job briefly covering all of latest controversy in the gaming industry.

VIDEO. GAME. DUNKEY.

That is all.

(also Cr1tikal/Penguinz0, he's fucking hysterical, however, his older stuff is a little funnier than his current stuff, mostly due to him being a lot more monotone)

There is NO LINE in the corner.

I'd like to recommend MrCaption.

...it's just that, for some reason, he randomly decided to delete literally every video on his channel. It's a shame since there were some pretty good ones (especially his 3 hour critique of Fallout 4).

My gold standard when it comes to game reviews is ACG. Dude does not hold back any punches, his reviews aren't loaded with useless meanderings, and are always entertaining.

One on the most recent video game discussion people is this guy going by cleanprincegaming. Excellent video essays, excellent production quality.

One channel I stumbled across a while back is curated by a talking owl called Shammy. He takes way too goddamn long in creating videos, but when he does get around to it, they tend to be really well done, and rife with all sorts of snarky humor I know all you folks love.

Another couple of great great vidya retrospective channels I've come acorss is GVMERS (sic) and Raycevik. Few videos thus far on each, but each one has been pretty well thought out and dripping with quality and research. Plus the narrator is fantastic.

And while not video essays per se, but more in the good old fashioned "sins" model, I have to mention Dartigan and GCN. Dart's "sins" are a more methodical, analytical sinning, whereas GCN is just a smug cynical jackass and he's great at doing it. Both have a decent back catalog, and update on a fairly regular basis (usually once or twice per month)

And finally, one special mention to Crowbcat, who is able to create some of the most scathing critiques of the gaming industry as a whole without once actually speaking a word.

Okay, that should give y'all something to peruse at least.

Once Vinesauce sits down and has a one on one about a game he generally has a good guess rather than something hazardous, hell talk about mechanics he didn't like and will just straight up say that in the end his own opinion doesn't matter.

I see GGGmanlives and Raycevik got mentioned already. I approve.

I do wanna plug MandaloreGaming though. He makes pretty solid reviews, although not on a regular schedule. They are of fine quality however, especially his Shogo : Mobile Armor Division review, which was one of my childhood games, and quite a weird and over the top one at that.

Also Seth (SsethTzeentach) provides some quality entertainment. He mostly reviews might and magic games, but occasionally he'll review shit like Honeyselect or Warband. He's got pretty funny reviews Like his Heroes of Might and Magic IV one. It's his latest and one of the funnier ones

MatthewMatosis did a video on Sonic Dreams Collection?

That's something I didn't expect.

I'd recommend Jordan Underneath, although he stopped doing game stuff. He used to do gaming reviews. He's basically an emo stereotype but I love his videos. Especially his stuff of atmosphere. Definitely not for everyone but if you like weird games, cute games, horror games, or combinations of the three, he's worth a look. His videos introduced me to a lot of new games.

I'd recommend Cvit, guy does videos on Yu-Gi-Oh which is autistic but his videos on the Hitman movie and games are great.

INB4 "lol look @ 2oda talking about Hitman again"

Biancocup is very good for such a tiny, tiny channel that surprisingly has been running for a couple of years.
Here's a video about revisiting a Barbie game he played as a kid with his sisters, it's pretty funny. 870 views, shameful.

His video about getting a Runescape girlfriend was also pretty funny.

His most viewed video is "Why is no-one playing Quake Champions?" and it's really good and insightful, better game journalism than any of the big sites, and watching it it actually spelled out why I don't play it myself even though I'm interested.
Just a link to it:

For those that like crusty old PC games there's Matt Chat, another tiny channel with videos that gets sub-1000 views.
What makes it good is that he makes tons of long-form interviews with old well known people like John Romero, Brian Fargo, Chuck Sommerville plus pretty much anyone from designer to programmer to producer that was instrumental to certain games but aren't a well known name(like some dude from Sirtech and stuff like that).
Matt is a pretty good, but very informal, interviewer that doesn't ask basic cookie cutter questions because he knows his shit. But he's also not a professional interviewer so it's really just watching two people having a conversation and by that I mean that he sometimes dives directly into the deep end to ask about so-and-so's thing in building 7 during the winter of '93 and it can be a bit confusing if you're not familiar with what he's talking about. Lots of names as well.
It's boring as fuck but at the same time pretty good, here's a link to his bazillion videos that no one has watched:

Another thing I like is Stop Skeletons From Fighting, a mid-sized channel with a crappy name but they make good stuff covering a lot things and do some good research, not just regurgitating a wikipedia page. They're actually putting out the sort of material that could be quoted as a source, so, pretty good. Pretty, pretty good.

Like this one, it has a lot of information about the people, contracts and history at Enix that explains why the music in Dragon Quest is of deliberate shit quality.

Plus the couple that runs it are delightful!

Shout out to Ahoy but everyone knows about him already.
