Red Dwarf

On the subject of the US remake, the worst thing they did (out of all the worst things) was try to redo the Wilma Flintstone scene.

Original: Lister and Cat are two lonely, desperate men trapped three million years into deep space, to the point where their impossible fantasies are the only thing that keeps them going.

Remake: Two guys hanging out and having a slightly odd conversation. No somber tone or desperation. The scene fails on every level.

Terry Farrell was probably my least favorite main main cast member of Star Trek DS9. (at least until they killed her off and replaced her with someone worse.) I still say she was the most embarrassing cast change in the American Red Dwarf, even considering everything else. She is clearly no Danny John-Jules.

What was even the point of gender swapping the character of Cat? Was it so they could have Lister and her fuck at some point if the series had continued? Because ewww... that's just gross.

So, looks like the recent special has garnered criticism for featuring a joke about trans people at the start:

I know I was skeptical about yet another Red Dwarf after what we've gotten over the past twenty or so years, but I just checked it out and really enjoyed it. I'd be all for them making another if they maintain the same quality.

For those wondering, the "transphobic joke" is Kryten suggesting that Cat get a sex change so Lister can impregnate him and repopulate the species, and Lister saying he won't do it because he's not attracted to Cat. This leads to a whole argument about who would make the sexier woman.

Yeah I had put off watching it because from the tv ads I thought it was going to be non-stop old references when they kept bringing up the cats but I was pleasantly surprised, and if they do continue I hope they keep Holly around as he really does play a big part of the dynamic.

Everybody being offended by whatever that joke might be is an transsexual sleazebag, end of story.

I'm watching "The Promised land" finally and all I can think of is they need to write a proper series finale before the boys all need mobility scooters.

I'd write some typical red dwarf alternate reality time travel fuckery where Dave gets to be young, back on Earth with Kochanski living that "It's a wonderful life" fantasy he had in the "Better than Life" novel. They'd have to cgi or have 2d animation to pull that off. As a big f.u. low budget thing harkening back to early seasons, the crappier this looks the funnier it would be.

Actually that Star Wars style scroll going by way too fast from series 3 opener explaining why so much is different (Holly is a woman avatar, Kryten being a regular) ending it like that would also be funny as hell.

The bigger, flashier special effects actually take away from the funny.
It should look low budget and junky.

caught part of Season 8 again accidentally, some of "Cassandra" and it actually wasn't as bad as I remember
edit to follow up re that recent drama, in "Krytie TV" they base an entire ep around Kryten being classified a woman
honestly there's been a decent amount of 8 that was less bad than I remember once you get over the massive change to the setting

Legal row puts future of Red Dwarf at risk

Fallout between creators Doug Naylor and Rob Grant heads for the High Court

The future of Red Dwarf has been put in jeopardy because of a row between its two creators.

Doug Naylor and Rob Grant dissolved their partnership in the mid-1990s, with the former continuing to write the show either alone or with other collaborators.

However, Naylor has now launched a High Court action against his former best friend over the rights to the show.

The legal broadside was prompted by his removal from the board of their joint company, Grant Naylor Productions, in March last year, 30 years after they set it up.

In his claim, reported in today’s Daily Mail, Naylor alleges the company told UKTV that it ‘retained all rights in Red Dwarf’.

At the time Naylor said he was talks with the broadcaster about making two more special episodes of the sci-fi comedy, following the completion of the feature-length adventure The Promised Land.

The suggestion is that those talks stalled because of the uncertainty over who owns the rights.

Naylor told the Daily Mail he was launching his action because: ’I want to make sure that I get back the rights to allow me to keep making Red Dwarf, the show I have been writing for more than 20 years.

‘It is bizarre and regrettable that Grant Naylor Productions and its other shareholders are trying to prevent me from doing so.

‘I’m sure that Red Dwarf fans and the much-loved cast would agree.’

Grant Naylor Productions made the first ten series of Red Dwarf, although Grant stepped down from writing after series seven. Baby Cow made the last two series in association with the company, as well as The Promised Land special.

The Promised Land was the biggest show on Dave during the first lockdown, attracting a consolidated 2 million viewers.

Grant and his company did not comment to the newspaper’s Sebastian Shakespeare column.

I don’t think it’s ever been made entirely clear. Robert Llewelyn implied in one of the DVD features that the split wasn’t exactly friendly.

As for what Rob Grant did, there was a sci-fi sitcom called The Strangerers that was more weird than funny and a historical sitcom called Dark Ages which I seem to recall had a joke I laughed at, but otherwise was crap. He wrote some novels and a couple of radio sitcoms. The novels I read were okay, but I wouldn’t re-read them.

While I still love what Doug's doing with Red Dwarf, when they wrote their separate books I couldn't stand Last Human (by Doug) but loved Backwards (Rob).

watching some season 10
it's not as bad as season 7 and 8
it's got flaws but it's not as bad as it struck me originally
maybe I'm just aware of how much worse a years-later follow-up to a sci-fi franchise can get?

So turns out the guy who played Elvis in the Series 4 episode Meltdown has been jailed after being convicted of raping a 15 year old girl in 2002:

Blackpool Elvis Presley impersonator raped and assaulted underage girl

A 'predatory' Blackpool paedophile who carved a career as an Elvis Presley impersonator has been jailed for committing historical sex offences against an underage girl.

62-year-old Clayton Sandlin, also known as Clayton Mark, was sentenced to eight years in prison at Preston Crown Court.

More here.

That actually sounds hilarious.

If these people had watched this show like they claimed they would have there are quite a few jokes that would make them clutch their pearls. Bent Bob comes to mind.

I know I'm 2 years late, but I'm gonna put this out there and calling out that almost none of the people complaining about the "transphobic" are actually trans or understood the joke.
