With The Getaway having been leaked earlier tonight, I've decided to start a thread about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. If you've listened to the leak, what do you think of it? Or if you have thoughts about their other albums, post them here as well.

I liked their first two albums but rapidly grew bored with them.

ETA: I suppose I really meant the first two albums with Frusciante on them. I hadn't noticed them much before that.

I guess I can understand that seeing as how Blood Sugar Sex Magik was when they peaked

They used to be my favorite band, but I hardly listen to them anymore. Just a handful of tracks here and there. I've still got all their albums, though, and I got to see them live in 2003, which was a lot of fun.

I prefer John Frusciante's solo stuff, personally. His album The Empyrean is one of my top 10 favorites.

haven't heard any of the leak, and can't say I'm terribly interested in hearing it, either. Their earlier stuff (basically anything off Blood Sugar Sex Magic) is great and I never get tired of it, but their sound kinda ran its course after By the Way, and most things they've done that I've heard since then have just kinda failed to impress, apart from Dani.

I like Blood Sugar Sex Magic, Uplift Mofo Party Plan, That Song From Coneheads, and the rest of their stuff is okay I guess.

Dark Necessities is a good song. I hope the rest of the album is good too.

have you listened to this album?
tbh, outside of this album i have nothing else to say about the band or it's members (well aside from atoms for peace)
but i might take a peak at john's solo stuff because of this

I listened to a sample of it. You may be disappointed if you expect all of Frusciante's work to be like that, the closest I think he came to it under his own name would be Sphere in the Heart of Silence, and even then it's less ambient and has actual melodies and lyrics and stuff. But he's definitely worth a listen.

tbh, the album sounds like aaron funk put the most work into it, but i'll give john's solo stuff a go

Frusciante's early work could often be brutal as a result of his heroin addiction at the time. His 2nd album Smile from the Streets You Hold was only released for drug money, and while it is cobbled together it does sometimes become quite emotionally disturbing because you can clearly hear him suffering. One music video that was made from that album actually is of him taking heroin after taking a bandage off his bloody arm to do it. It's a miracle he actually kept his arms with his lack of needle hygiene:

The fact that he made it through that period of his life alive is an absolute miracle

There was a fire at his house that he narrowed escaped, along with that mouth infection that meant he lost his teeth and had to get replacements/implants for them all.

While this documentary might be in dutch, the bits involving John are English and make for an enlightening look into his life at the time, also contains a performance or two of his songs from his first solo album.

There was also this weird "documentary" called "Stuff" shot by Johnny Depp and Gibby Haynes about the squalor he was living in at the time.

It's mostly just walking through his filthy house (the same one that eventually burned down).
