Nah man. Even in countries with supposedly great public transit, you still see plenty of people who prefer driving. Why?

• Takes 20 minutes as opposed to 30-40.
• Zero control over delayed or cancelled trains.
• Not stuck in a crowded bus/train.
• Price. If you’re just two or three people, it’s often cheaper than public transit.

I think anyone that pursues massive live changes to "make themselves happy," whether it's having kids or moving across the country or buying a wildly expensive car, are doomed to be disappointed simply because of how much weight they're putting into this huge change. You shouldn't go into parenthood feeling lost, but expecting it to be the best thing to ever happen to you is also a terrible approach. You're just bound to be let down by the inevitable shitty moments that come from it

Having a kid won't magically make you happy, no. But here are things that will:

1. Accepting reality and learning to make the best of it rather than denying it and raging against it (ie "I am a female with reproductive capacity and the bright side of this is I can have a family!" vs "I want to be a true and honest man instead and fear pregnancy as the imposition of a horrific parasite that must be resisted and avoided at all costs!")

2. Working with your natural abilities rather than against them. ("I am a cute young woman with a ticking biological clock- I can find a nice young man and we can build a family together." vs "I am REALLY A MAN REALLY MOM ITS NOT A PHASE admire my short kinghood and forearm peen!- I will meanwhile quench my mothering instincts by collecting $400 dead looking silicon dolls!")

3. Growing into life's challenges rather than becoming a fearful, avoidant weirdo. ("Parenting is tough, I will stretch myself and learn patience and discipline to get better at it." vs "I will hide in my bughive/mom's basement avoiding any and all situations that might force me to be anything other than a neurotic overgrown child.")

Most people are capable of doing all of these things, even idiots, even Redditors, with a little support and encouragement. That's how our species has not died out so far.

And postpartum mood disorders are by and large a combination of biological glitches and a shitty social environment. They are not character flaws. They are also eminently treatable by any halfway competent physician.
