Didn't Google not even manage to make their own fiber internet happen? They're just trying the idea again but an even lazier alternative.

Oh no, they did get a 100% fiber internet service off the ground and by all accounts it's astonishingly good (true full-duplex unmetered/unthrottled 1 gigabit up/down) ... in the three or four markets they bothered setting up shop in.

Like so many abandoned Google projects, though, it "got hard" and they lost interest in continuing efforts to expand. I think they mostly just wanted to scare the shit out of the telecom monopolists and flex a bit with their giant bags of money to go toe-to-toe with whichever telco was dumb enough to take the bait and win an easy highly-visible victory, and once they'd managed to actually bust through the very real resistance the telcos put up they sorta just shrugged and said "welp, that's done, what's next?"

To their credit they apparently do take the network they did deploy seriously and do a good job maintaining it and supporting the customers that use it. So it wasn't just unceremoniously dumped in the furnace overnight like Google Reader was. Assholes.

probably did it as an experimental project, to find out if they can make it profitable. and the answer is probably no, hence no further expansion.

My one biggest regret is that none of these people are as bad as they are made out to be. If they were. Reddit would fucking burn.

The truth is if even 1% of the Donald or whoever users decided to destroy reddit they effectively could. Simply by targeting niche communities with limited mod squads and spamming some fucking atrocious shit on there over and over and over again like AHS until the mods get sick of it and leave. Flood the mod queue with false reports. Spam their inbox with "you'll never be a woman". Make thousands of shitty subs with no real purpose and extremely graphic content.

Instead they sigh and move their site over. It would be pathetic if it didn't prove how bullshit reddit is to freak out over them to begin with. Maybe if they responded by acting as bad as AHS I'd see reddit's point.

What's funny is the closest example to that is unironically the blackouts perpetrated by powerjannies.

They control a ridiculous amount of subreddits and have the power to go "lights out" and watch as Reddit loses tens of millions of page clicks per day, even if they forced them to be restored, good look monitoring every subreddit without active mods.

But they used it to spam horse porn and get rid of a lockdown meme sub. At this point Reddit is beyond redemption.

For example, there's this sub ran exclusively by this Chinese-American guy who can't help but think of Indians all day long and posts nothing but negative articles about Poos and talking about how Chinks are the master race or something.
